A quasi-experiment on using guided mobile learning interventions in ESL classrooms: Time use and academic performance
Abstract This quasi-experimental study examined a guided learning approach towards the use of mobile devices and investigated the performance of language learners who were guided in the usage. A total of 419 students from two faculties were invited to participate in this 8-week intervention, 155 participants in the control group and 264 in the experimental group. In the experimental group, the researchers incorporated guided activities Module Intervention Model (MIM) using mobile...

A comparative analysis of policies, strategies and programmes for information and communication technology integration in education in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the republic of Ireland
Abstract This paper provides a comparative analysis of policies, strategies and programmes for Information and Communication Technology (ICT) integration in primary and post-primary education, that were active in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) and in the Republic of Ireland in 2016. The analysis showed that while KSA was a relative newcomer to the integration of ICT in education, it was responsive in seeking to enhance the quality of education and support transitions to the...

Comparison of Clinical Psychologist and Physician Beliefs and Practices Concerning Malingering: Results from a Mixed Methods Study
Abstract Malingering, or intentional feigning of impairment for an external incentive, has been the topic of extensive psychological research in recent decades. The emphasis on symptom validity assessment in training, practice, and research in clinical psychology is not echoed across other health professions. While past surveys of clinical psychologists revealed positive beliefs and attitudes toward validity assessment, much less is known about physicians in this area, particularly...

The role of performance status in small-cell lung cancer in the era of immune checkpoint inhibitors.
Small-cell lung cancer (SCLC) represents about 15% of all new lung cancer diagnoses. It is strongly associated with smoking, develops at a median age of 65-70, and is diagnosed at an advanced stage in 70% of cases[1]. SCLC is characterized by aggressive tumour growth and early metastatic spread. SCLC also stands out due to an impressive initial response to chemotherapy, even in the advanced setting, though the response is consistently and predictably transient.

Synthesis and Characterization of Nanostructured Lipid Nanocarriers for Enhanced Sun Protection Factor of Octyl p-methoxycinnamate
Abstract Sunlight is important to health, but higher exposure to radiation causes early aging of the skin and skin damage that can lead to skin cancers. This study aimed at producing a stable octyl p-methoxycinnamate (OMC)–loaded nanostructured lipid carrier (NLC) sunscreen, which can help in the photoprotective effect. NLC was produced by emulsification-sonication method and these systems were composed of myristyl myristate (MM), caprylic capric triglyceride (CCT), Tween® 80...

Juvenile hormone suppresses aggregation behavior through influencing antennal gene expression in locusts
by Wei Guo, Juan Song, Pengcheng Yang, Xiangyong Chen, Dafeng Chen, Dani Ren, Le Kang, Xianhui Wang Animals often exhibit dramatically behavioral plasticity depending on their internal physiological state, yet little is known about the underlying molecular mechanisms. The migratory locust, Locusta migratoria, provides an excellent model for addressing these questions because of their famous phase polyphenism involving remarkably behavioral plasticity between gregarious and solitarious phases....

ArdC, a ssDNA-binding protein with a metalloprotease domain, overpasses the recipient hsdRMS restriction system broadening conjugation host range
by Lorena González-Montes, Irene del Campo, M. Pilar Garcillán-Barcia, Fernando de la Cruz, Gabriel Moncalián Plasmids, when transferred by conjugation in natural environments, must overpass restriction-modification systems of the recipient cell. We demonstrate that protein ArdC, encoded by broad host range plasmid R388, was required for conjugation from Escherichia coli to Pseudomonas putida. Expression of ardC was required in the recipient cells, but not in the donor cells. Besides, ardC was...

Long noncoding RNA PAHAL modulates locust behavioural plasticity through the feedback regulation of dopamine biosynthesis
by Xia Zhang, Ya'nan Xu, Bing Chen, Le Kang Some long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) are specifically expressed in brain cells, implying their neural and behavioural functions. However, how lncRNAs contribute to neural regulatory networks governing the precise behaviour of animals is less explored. Here, we report the regulatory mechanism of the nuclear-enriched lncRNA PAHAL for dopamine biosynthesis and behavioural adjustment in migratory locusts (Locusta migratoria), a species with extreme behavioral...

FBXW7 triggers degradation of KMT2D to favor growth of diffuse large B-cell lymphoma cells.
Mature B-cell neoplasms are the fifth most common neoplasm. Due to significant heterogeneity at the clinical and genetic levels, current therapies for these cancers fail to provide long-term cures. The clinical success of proteasome inhibition for the treatment of multiple myeloma and B-cell lymphomas has made the ubiquitin pathway an important emerging therapeutic target. In this study, we assessed the role of the E3 ligase FBXW7 in mature B-cell neoplasms. FBXW7 targeted the frequently inactivated...

Allosteric inhibition of SHP2 stimulates anti-tumor immunity by transforming the immunosuppressive environment
The protein-tyrosine phosphatase SHP2 binds to phosphorylated signaling motifs on regulatory immunoreceptors including PD-1, but its functional role in tumor immunity is unclear. Using preclinical models, we show that RMC-4550, an allosteric inhibitor of SHP2, induces anti-tumor immunity with effects equivalent to or greater than those resulting from checkpoint blockade. In the tumor microenvironment, inhibition of SHP2 modulated T cell infiltrates similar to checkpoint blockade. Additionally, RMC-4550...

The DNA sensor cGAS is decorated by acetylation and phosphorylation modifications in the context of immune signaling [Research]
The cyclic GMP-AMP synthase (cGAS) protein is a pattern-recognition receptor of the mammalian innate immune system that is recognized as a main cytosolic sensor of pathogenic or damaged DNA. cGAS DNA binding initiates catalytic production of the second messenger, cyclic GMP-AMP, which activates the STING-TBK1-IRF3 signaling axis to induce cytokine expression. Post-translational modification (PTM) has started to be recognized as a critical component of cGAS regulation, yet the extent of these modifications...

ICOS signaling promotes a secondary humoral response after re-challenge with Plasmodium chabaudi chabaudi AS
by Leah E. Latham, Daniel J. Wikenheiser, Jason S. Stumhofer The co-stimulatory molecule ICOS is associated with the induction and regulation of T helper cell responses, including the differentiation of follicular helper T (Tfh) cells and the formation and maintenance of memory T cells. However, the role of ICOS signaling in secondary immune responses is largely unexplored. Here we show that memory T cell formation and maintenance are influenced by persistent infection with P. chabaudi chabaudi...
