Brain metastases treated with radiosurgery or hypofractionated stereotactic radiotherapy: outcomes and predictors of survival
ConclusionsSRS and HSFRT are equally effective and safe for the treatment of BM, with no exceptions among different primary tumors. Disease control, surgery, age, and prognostic scales correlated with OS. However, the lack of survival benefit regarding WBRT might become logical evidence for its omission in a subset of patients. Clinical translation of 18 F-fluoropivalate – a PET tracer for imaging short-chain fatty acid metabolism: safety, biodistribution, and dosimetry in fed and fasted healthy volunteers
Abstract Background Fatty acids derived de novo or taken up from the extracellular space are an essential source of nutrient for cell growth and proliferation. Radiopharmaceuticals including 11C-acetate, and 18F-FAC (2-18F-fluoroacetate), have previously been used to study short-chain fatty acid (SCFA) metabolism. We developed 18F-fluoropivalate (18F-FPIA; 3-18F-fluoro-2,2-dimethylpropionic acid) bearing a gem-dimethyl substituent to...

Targeting complex, adaptive responses in melanoma therapy
The approval of a BRAF-inhibitor for clinical use in BRAF-mutated metastatic melanoma patients in 2011 encouraged the scientific and medical communities that an increasingly more sophisticated mechanistic understanding of tumor progression will ultimately result in substantial improvements in clinical responses. Indeed, since that time many new drugs have significantly improved overall survival. However, it has become increasingly obvious that most tumors have an astounding ability to adapt to the...

Hairline-Lowering Surgery
As an alternative to hair transplantation for lowering the overly high hairline, hairline-lowering/forehead-reduction surgery has several advantages, including unsurpassed density and immediate results. Appropriate candidates for this surgery must have a stable frontal hairline (thus excluding most men) and a fairly to very mobile scalp that will permit sufficient advancement to warrant this more “invasive” approach. The main objective of this surgery is the lowering of the hairline. The authors’...

Clinical predictors of blood pressure response after renal artery stenting
The Cardiovascular Outcomes in Renal Atherosclerotic Lesions (CORAL) trial, a multicenter randomized controlled trial, failed to demonstrate a benefit of renal artery stenting (RAS) over medical therapy in patients with renal artery stenosis and hypertension. However, there are patients for whom RAS is a consideration because of failure of medical therapy. Unfortunately, selection of patients for RAS is complicated by a lack of validated predictors of blood pressure (BP) response. A previous single-center...

A systematic review and meta-analysis of complication rates after carotid procedures performed by different specialties
Different competencies and skills are required and obtained during medical specialization. However, whether these have an impact on procedural outcomes of carotid endarterectomy (CEA) or carotid artery stenting (CAS) is unclear. We assessed the reported association between operator specialization and procedural outcomes after CEA or CAS to determine whether CEA and CAS should be performed by specific specialties.

Poor glycemic control is associated with significant increase in major limb amputation and adverse events in the 30-day postoperative period after infrainguinal bypass
Understanding modifiable risk factors to improve surgical outcomes is increasingly important in value-based health care. There is an established association between peripheral artery disease (PAD), diabetes, and limb loss, but less is known about expected outcomes after revascularization relative to the degree of glycemic control. The purpose of this study was to determine the association between hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) management in diabetics and surgical outcomes after open infrainguinal bypass.

Palmatine alleviates hyperalgesia by inhibiting the expression of calcitonin gene-related peptide in the trigeminal ganglion of rats with chronic constriction injury of the infraorbital nerve
Trigeminal neuralgia is one of the most common of the neuropathic pains, and it can seriously influence patients’ quality of life. Calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) is a type of nociceptive neurotransmitter that is expressed in neurons of the trigeminal ganglion and plays a major part in transmitting pain. The rat model of trigeminal neuralgia was established by causing a chronic constriction injury of the infraorbital nerve (CCI-ION). Male Sprague-Dawley rats (n=24) were randomly divided into...

Re: re: Review of emerging temporomandibular joint total joint replacement systems
As clearly stated in the introduction to our paper: “A review of those that are emerging at present shows that these elements vary, and it is important that both surgeons and patients understand this when deciding on the best system to use. The goal of this review therefore was to catalogue these important elements for the emerging devices as they currently exist.”1 One of the major points made was that for most of the devices cited there was a lack of embodiment, manufacturing, laboratory testing,...

New approach for the anchorage of nasal implants without osseointegration using the Epiplating system for a magnetic prosthesis
Nasal prostheses can be retained mechanically, by adhesion, or surgically by implants. Implant-retained prostheses are reported to improve quality of life and patients prefer them to adhesive ones.1 To obtain stability for a nasal prosthesis, a minimum of two to three strategically-positioned implants are required. The implant location depends on several factors, including thickness of bone or previous radiation to the site.2
