Topological edge states of interacting photon pairs emulated in a topolectrical circuit
Nature Communications, Published online: 18 March 2020; doi:10.1038/s41467-020-14994-7Experimental studies of topological phenomena for interacting quantum systems are challenging. Here, the authors exploit the analogy between a quantum two-body problem in one dimension and a classical two-dimensional problem, emulating two-photon topological bound states in 1D using a 2D electrical circuit.

Full-length transcript characterization of SF3B1 mutation in chronic lymphocytic leukemia reveals downregulation of retained introns
Nature Communications, Published online: 18 March 2020; doi:10.1038/s41467-020-15171-6Long-read sequencing is useful in determining exon-connectivity of full-length mRNA isoforms. Here, by long-read nanopore sequencing, the authors report that intron retention is downregulated in SF3B1 mutant chronic lymphocytic leukemia cells than normal B cells.

Female copulation song is modulated by seminal fluid
Nature Communications, Published online: 18 March 2020; doi:10.1038/s41467-020-15260-6Male fruitflies sing a patterned wing song during courtship. Here, the authors show that females sing a distinct song during copulation, which is controlled by sex-specific neurons, depends on seminal fluid from the male accessory gland and modulates latency of female remating with subsequent males.

Sub-nanosecond memristor based on ferroelectric tunnel junction
Nature Communications, Published online: 18 March 2020; doi:10.1038/s41467-020-15249-1Memristor devices based on ferroelectric tunnel junctions are promising, but suffer from quite slow switching times. Here, the authors report on ultrafast switching times at and above room temperature of 600ps in Ag/BaTiO3/Nb:SrTiO3 based ferroelectric tunnel junctions.

Context-dependent dynamics lead to the assembly of functionally distinct microbial communities
Nature Communications, Published online: 18 March 2020; doi:10.1038/s41467-020-15169-0Historical contingency can affect community composition and function, but the extent to which this occurs is unclear. Here the authors use pitcher plant microbial communities to demonstrate that community dynamics and key metabolic functions at equilibrium depend on history and initial composition.

Nature Communications, Published online: 18 March 2020; doi:10.1038/s41467-020-15190-3Unconventional computing architectures might outperform current ones, but their realization has been limited to solving simple specific problems. Here, a network of interconnected Belousov-Zhabotinski reactions, operated by independent magnetic stirrers, performs encoding/decoding operations and data storage.

Nature Communications, Published online: 18 March 2020; doi:10.1038/s41467-020-15204-0Genetic variation in natural populations could represent gene drive resistant alleles, preventing successful application for population management. Here the authors survey 1280 genomes from three mosquito species and concludes natural variation will not be detrimental to deploying gene drive technology.

Filamentation of the bacterial bi-functional alcohol/aldehyde dehydrogenase AdhE is essential for substrate channeling and enzymatic regulation
Nature Communications, Published online: 18 March 2020; doi:10.1038/s41467-020-15214-yAcetaldehyde–alcohol dehydrogenase (AdhE) converts acetyl-CoA to ethanol and is a key enzyme in bacterial alcoholic fermentation. AdhE forms spirosomes and, here, the authors present the cryoEM structures of compact and extended E.coli AdhE spirosomes and show that the extended conformation is the catalytically active form of the enzyme and discuss mechanistic implications.
