Evaluating primary intra-arterial chemotherapy versus intravenous plus intra-arterial chemotherapy for advanced intraocular retinoblastoma
ConclusionsWithin a 3-year follow-up period, IVC plus IAC produced no additional benefit over primary IAC for treating advanced intraocular retinoblastoma in terms of local tumor control and extending survival. Longer follow-up periods are required to assess long-term efficacy. (Source: Cancer Chemotherapy and Pharmacology)

Selective loss of diversity in doubled-haploid lines from European maize landraces [NEW RESULTS]
Maize landraces are well adapted to their local environments and present valuable sources of genetic diversity for breeding and conservation. But the maintenance of open-pollinated landraces in ex-situ programs is challenging, as regeneration of seed can often lead to inbreeding depression and the loss of diversity due to genetic drift. Recent reports suggest that the production of doubled-haploid (DH) lines from landraces may serve as a convenient means to preserve genetic diversity in a homozygous...

Clinical presentation of young people (10 –24 years old) with brain tumors: results from the international MOBI-Kids study
ConclusionsThis is the largest clinical epidemiology study of BT in young people conducted so far. Many signs and symptoms were identified, dominated by headaches and nausea/vomiting. Diagnosis was generally rapid but in 12% diagnostic delay exceeded 1 year with none of the symptoms been associated with a distinctly long time until diagnosis. (Source: Journal of Neuro-Oncology)

Comparison of the balafilcon A and samfilcon A lenses on postoperative pain control and epithelial healing time after photorefractive keratectomy: a contralateral eye study
Abstract To compare the effects of balafilcon A and samfilcon A silicone hydrogel bandage contact lenses on postoperative pain control and epithelial healing time after photorefractive keratectomy (PRK). Seventy-four eyes of 37 patients who underwent bilateral PRK were included in this randomized clinical trial study. In the end of the surgery, a balafilcon A lens was used in one eye and a samfilcon A lens was used in the fellow eye randomly. Pain, blurred vision, epiphora, photophobia,...

Effect of a modular neck hip prosthesis on anteversion and hip rotation in total hip arthroplasty for developmental dysplasia of the hip
Abstract Total hip arthroplasty (THA) is often required to decrease the excessive anatomical femoral anteversion (AA) in developmental dysplasia of the hip. Studies have recommended decreasing the AA via the use of a retroverted modular neck. However, hip rotation after THA may strengthen or weaken the effect of changing the AA. Thus, the present study analyzed the effect of a retroverted neck on AA and hip rotation. Patients who underwent THA using a straight neck (ST group)...

Dysfunction of cortical GABAergic neurons leads to sensory hyper-reactivity in a Shank3 mouse model of ASD
Nature Neuroscience, Published online: 02 March 2020; doi:10.1038/s41593-020-0598-6Chen, Deister et al. show that Shank3B-knockout mice display hypersensitivity to tactile sensory stimulation and that dysfunction of interneurons in somatosensory cortex contributes to the sensory hyper-reactivity in this mouse model of autism.

Aiming for stable control
Nature Neuroscience, Published online: 28 February 2020; doi:10.1038/s41593-020-0601-2Motor learning is composed of explicit ‘strategic’ components and implicit ‘automatic’ components. Miyamoto and colleagues reveal how these components work together during visuomotor adaptation, providing evidence that an implicit component corrects for a noisy explicit process.

Microglia and macrophages promote corralling, wound compaction and recovery after spinal cord injury via Plexin-B2
Nature Neuroscience, Published online: 28 February 2020; doi:10.1038/s41593-020-0597-7Zhou et al. unveil a novel role for activated microglia and macrophages during wound healing after CNS injury. Inflammatory dilated cardiomyopathy
Abstract Inflammatory dilated cardiomyopathy (DCMi) is a syndrome, not an etiological disease entity. The infective etiology and the immunopathology can be best determined through endomyocardial biopsy with a complete work-up by light microscopy, immunohistology, and polymerase chain reaction for microbial agents. This review focuses on the methodological advances in diagnosis in the past few years and exemplifies the importance of an etiology-orientated treatment in different...

Role of massa intermedia in human neurocognitive processing
Abstract Massa intermedia (MI) is an inconsistent midline structure in the human brain that is absent in approximately 30% of the population. Absence of MI is seen more frequently in schizophrenia spectrum disorder and bipolar disorder. However, very little is known about the normal role of MI in the human brain. The purpose of this study was to investigate the role of human MI in cortical and subcortical cognitive processing as determined by differences between subjects with...
