Differentiation of Mouse Breast Epithelial HC11 and EpH4 Cells
We describe techniques for differentiation induction of two breast epithelial lines, HC11 and EpH4. While both require fetal calf serum, insulin, and prolactin to produce milk proteins, EpH4 cells can fully differentiate into mammospheres in three-dimensional culture. These complementary models are useful for signal transduction studies of differentiation and neoplasia.

Online Information for Treatment for Low-Risk Thyroid Cancer: Assessment of Timeliness, Content, Quality, and Readability
Abstract The Internet is a key source of health information, yet little is known about resources for low-risk thyroid cancer treatment. We examined the timeliness, content, quality, readability, and reference to the 2015 American Thyroid Association (ATA) guidelines in websites about thyroid cancer treatment. We identified the top 60 websites using Google, Bing, and Yahoo for “thyroid cancer.” Timeliness and content analysis identified updates in the ATA guidelines (n = 6) and...

Bionic women and men part 4 – cardiovascular, cerebrovascular and exercise responses among patients supported with left ventricular assist devices
New Findings LVAD patients are predisposed to hypertension which may increase the risk of stroke. Hypertension may result from markedly elevated levels of sympathetic nerve activity, which occurs through a baroreceptor‐mediated pathway in response to chronic exposure to a non‐physiologic (and reduced) pulse. Cerebral autoregulatory processes appear to be preserved in the absence of a physiologic pulse. Nevertheless, the rate of ischemic/embolic and hemorrhagic stroke is unacceptably high and...

Metabo and mechanoreceptor expression in human heart failure: relationships with the locomotor muscle afferent influence on exercise responses
New Findings What is the central question of this study? The goal of this study was to compare locomotor muscle metabo and mechanoreceptor expression in heart failure patients and controls. Further, we investigated if relationships existed between the protein expression and cardiopulmonary responses during exercise with locomotor muscle neural afferent feedback inhibition. What is the main finding and its importance? The novel findings were that heart failure patients exhibited greater protein...

Bionic women and men part 1 – Cardiovascular lessons from heart failure patients implanted with left ventricular assist devices (LVADs)
New Findings Advanced heart failure patients who are implanted with left ventricular assist devices (LVADs) have a unique circulation that is characterised by a reduced or even absent arterial pulse. The remarkable survival of these patients is accompanied by circulatory complications, including stroke, gastro‐intestinal bleeding and right‐heart failure. Understanding the mechanisms related to the complications in LVAD patients will help the patients and also advance our fundamental understanding...

Right ventricular dysfunction in patients implanted with left ventricular assist devices
New Findings Incidence of right heart failure post left ventricular assist device (LVAD) implantation is improving, as the understanding of LV‐RV physiology improves. Yet, it remains one of major adverse events affecting LVAD patients. Assessment of RV failure in the context of LVAD physiology should consider its unique anatomical and physiological peculiarities which may advance our understanding of RV function in general. Abstract The adaptation of the right ventricular (RV) output...

Respiratory and locomotor muscle blood flow during exercise in health and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease
New Findings Using an approach we developed to measure muscle blood flow by indocyanine green dye detected by near infrared spectroscopy, we have found that isocapnic hyperpnoea at rest leads to an increase in respiratory muscle blood flow that is proportional to the respiratory muscle work required. Surprisingly, cycling exercise interferes with respiratory muscle blood flow, especially in COPD, but even in health athletes. Intercostal muscle blood flow during exercise fails to reach flow rates...

Firefighter occupation is associated with increased risk for laryngeal and hypopharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma among men from the Greater Boston area
ObjectiveFirefighters are exposed to a wide variety of carcinogens during the line of duty, including several associated with head and neck cancer. Existing studies assessing head and neck cancer risk with firefighting have predominately included occupational cohorts or registry data, which are limited by inability to adjust for smoking and alcohol consumption—major risk factors for head and neck cancer. Our objective was to assess the risk of head and neck cancer among men with an occupational history...

Anthropogenic seed dispersal: Rethinking the origins of plant domestication
Over the past three millennia, selective breeding has dramatically widened the array of plant domestication traits. However, a close look at the archaeobotanical record illustrates a similar suite of linked traits emerging before humans began selectively breeding food crops. A researchers now summarizes all of these early evolutionary responses in plants, arguing that these shared traits evolved in response to human seed-dispersal services.
