A Reliable Septum Exists between the Lateral Cord and Medial and Posterior Cords in the Costoclavicular Region. Clinical and Microanatomical Considerations in Brachial Plexus Anesthetic Blockade
Abstract Background and objectives The ultrasound‐guided proximal infraclavicular costoclavicular block (PICB) appears popular but its results are inconsistent. We sought an accurate demonstration of septae formed between the brachial plexus cords. Methods We performed in‐plane, lateral‐to‐medial PICBs on 120 patients and recorded images. Once the most superficial lateral cord component was entered, a 0.4 to 0.6 mA current was applied to confirm needle placement; 5 mL of local anesthetic...

The microscopic anatomy of endothelial cells in human atherosclerosis: Focus on ER and mitochondria
Dilation of ER is a common ultrastructural feature found in the ECs of human atherosclerotic plaque. Adjacent mitochondria also show alterations in their structural organization. Abstract Once regarded merely as a bland lipid storage disease consequence of aging, atherosclerosis is currently considered a slow and continuous inflammatory process (partially controllable by treatment) with complex etiology involving a multitude of genetic and environmental risk factors which ultimately result...

Petrosal and bony labyrinth morphology of the stem paenungulate mammal (Paenungulatomorpha) Ocepeia daouiensis from the Paleocene of Morocco
We provide the first detailed description of the petrosal and labyrinth of the stem paenungulate mammal Ocepeia (Paleocene of Morocco). It shows a few derived features such as a small labyrinth and a large pars mastoidea, beside a primitive morphology as for the whole skull of Ocepeia . Together with the generalized skull pattern also seen in the earliest crown paenungulates, it supports an ancestral paenungulate and afrotherian morphotype poorly derived from the eutherian pattern. Abstract...

Anatomy and ontogenetic changes of the facial and gular musculature of the tetra Astyanax brucutu: A remarkable case of adaptation to durophagy
Astyanax brucutu is a peculiar durophagous Neotropical tetra that exhibits a dramatic ontogenetic shift in its diet, which is coupled with by equally remarkable musculoskeletal changes in its feeding apparatus. Myological changes primarily involve expansions of specific portions of the adductor mandibulae and associated tendons and ligaments that likely represent adaptations to increase the biting power allowing adults to feed on gastropod shells. Abstract Astyanax brucutu is a peculiar...

Is relative growth by the mammalian heart biphasic or monophasic?
Relative growth by the heart of Horro sheep has been reported to be biphasic and discontinuous on the logarithmic scale, with a substantial increase in both relative and absolute mass of the heart occurring shortly after birth. However, the discontinuity was an artifact of logarithmic transformation. Both the logarithmic distribution and the arithmetic distribution are well described by straight lines. Abstract I re‐examined data for relative growth by the heart in four species of mammal to...

GRB7 is an oncogenic driver and potential therapeutic target in oesophageal adenocarcinoma
Abstract Efficacious therapeutic approaches are urgently needed to improve outcomes in patients with oesophageal adenocarcinoma (OAC). However, oncogenic drivers amenable to targeted therapy are limited and their functional characterisation is essential. Among few targeted therapies available, anti‐human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2) therapy showed only modest benefit for patients with OAC. Herein, we investigated the potential oncogenic role of growth factor receptor bound protein 7...

Bronchioalveolar stem cells in lung repair, regeneration and disease
Abstract Bronchioalveolar stem cells (BASCs) are a lung resident stem cell population located at bronchioalveolar duct junctions that contribute to the maintenance of bronchiolar club cells and alveolar epithelial cells of the distal lung. Their transformed counterparts are considered to be likely progenitors of lung adenocarcinomas, which has been a major area of research in relation to BASCs. A critical limitation in addressing the function of BASCs in vivo has been the lack of a unique BASC...
