Companion animals likely do not spread COVID-19 but may get infected themselves
Abstract Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is a highly contagious infectious disease caused by the novel severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). From the epidemiological data, the picture emerges that the more severe etiopathologies among COVID-19 patients are found in elderly people. The risk of death due to COVID-19 increases exponentially with age. Eight out of 10 COVID-19 related deaths occur in people older than 65 years of age. Older patients with...

Young trees have special adaptations that could save the Amazon
Some of the Amazon’s smaller understory trees, juvenile members of the same species as the canopy trees, are capable of changing the way they process water to withstand drought conditions and still continue to grow up towards available light. (Pexels/)The Amazon rainforest’s future is in peril. Biologists and environmental scientists have known for some time that government policies that oppress Indigenous rights and allow logging have weakened the forest’s cohesion, while climate change has led...

How Disney fools your brain to make lines feel magically short
Not even a FastPass, FastPass+, or MaxPass can save you from the slow crawl of time. (Muti/)Waiting in line can test even the most patient person, but the happiest place on earth can make the longest of queues fly by. All it takes is these three tricks of the mind—no Disney magic necessary. When you wait for Space Mountain, for example, walls separate riders and twist the queue back and forth. This stops you from grasping the true number of folks ahead, dampening the urge to bow out of a seemingly...

Hitting a baseball is the hardest skill to pull off in sports. Here why
Getting a hit in baseball is one of the hardest things to do regularly in sports. (Pexels/)There are few aspects of life where you can fail seven out of 10 times and still be considered great at what you do. With a 30 percent score on the MCAT, you wouldn’t get into medical school. You’d likely lose money if you only won 30 percent of your Super Bowl bets. But in baseball, if you get a hit 30 percent of the time you step up to the plate, you might be headed to the Hall of Fame—and that’s because...
