Webinar: Model Practices Webinar Series, Part 2
The National Association of County and City Health Officials will host a webinar to discuss this year’s award-winning Model Practices in Community Involvement, Environmental Health, Food Safety and Emergency Preparedness. Featured presentations will include Columbus Public Health (Ohio) talking about their youth tobacco sales restrictions at retail locations (Tobacco21), and the Monterey County Environmental Health Bureau (California) discussing their Environmental Public Health Leadership Institute and the Monterey County Food Safety Conference. The webinar will be held on October 15, 2019, from 2:00 to 3:00 pm (EDT).


CDC Engagement with Community- and Faith-Based Organizations in Public Health Emergencies
The American Journal of Public Health recently published a journal article that explores the ability of community- and faith-based organizations (CFBOs) to respond to the needs of vulnerable communities during public health emergencies. The journal demonstrates how CFBOs were not well integrated into federal response plans, and it explores how there has been significant progress to integrate these organizations into public health preparedness, response, and recovery post-Katrina. The journal article describes how CDC engaged with CFBOs during responses to pandemic influenza, Ebola, and Zika.

Webinar: Integrating Legal Services into Recovery Efforts: Can Medical-Legal Partnerships Help? (Part II)
The American Health Lawyers Association’s In-House Counsel Practice Group, in collaboration with CDC’s Public Health Law Program, will host the second part of a webinar called “Integrating Legal Services into Recovery Efforts: Can Medical-Legal Partnerships Help?” It is the second webinar in a three-part series titled “Rural Health: Problems, Public Health Approaches, and Potential Legal Solutions.” This webinar will focus on public health and legal approaches to addressing the opioid epidemic in rural communities. Speakers will explore the data related to disparities in opioid-related health outcomes in rural and urban communities. It is free for CDC employees (with a code) and CLE is available. The webinar will be held on October 10, 2019, from 2:00 to 3:30 pm (EDT) and will include a Q&A session. The registration code is CDCFALL2019

Call for Abstracts: 2020 Public Health Law Conference
The Network for Public Health Law is hosting the 2020 Public Health Law Conference September 16–18, 2020, in Baltimore, Maryland. This year’s theme is “Building and Supporting Healthy Communities for All.” Abstract submissions that focus on legal and policy strategies to address fundamental drivers of inequity, promote health and well-being, and save lives are being considered. Submissions should relate to the theme under the conference tracks: addressing social and structural barriers to health equity, building healthy environments and climate resiliency, health policy now, improving child and adolescent health, and strengthening public health legal capacity. Abstract submissions are due by November 8, 2019, at 11:59 pm (EST).

Issue Brief: Summary of State Laws Addressing the School Breakfast Gap
Starting the day with a healthy breakfast has been proven to improve academic success and health outcomes. The Network for Public Health Law has created an issue brief that explores the framework of the National School Lunch and School Breakfast Programs, the school breakfast gap, and the subsequent impact it has on public health. The issue brief will also explore the most prevalent state interventions that aim to bridge the breakfast gap.

Webinar—Emergency Management Assistance Compact: Legal Considerations in 90 Minutes
The National Governor’s Association in collaboration with CDC’s Public Health Law Program is offering the second webinar in a four-part series titled “Preparedness and Response for Public Health Emergencies: Exploring the Role of Law.” This second webinar will focus on mechanisms and requirements that states can use to request and supply aid under the Emergency Management Assistance Compact (EMAC). It will feature representatives from states participating in EMAC. The webinar will be held on October 17, 2019, at 2:00–3:30 pm (EDT) and will include a live Q&A session.
