- Loss of Single Domain Function in Modular Assembly Line Alters Size and Shape of Complex PolyketideThe structural wealth of complex polyketide metabolites produced by bacteria results from intricate, highly evolved biosynthetic programs of modular assembly lines, in which the number of modules defines the size of the backbone, and the domain composition controls the degree of functionalization. We report a remarkable case where polyketide chain length and scaffold depend on the function of a single b‐keto processing domain: A ketoreductase dom
- A Single Thermoresponsive Diblock Copolymer Can Form Spheres, Worms or Vesicles in Aqueous SolutionIt is well‐known that the self‐assembly of AB diblock copolymers in solution can produce various morphologies depending on the relative volume fraction of each block. Recently, polymerization‐induced self‐assembly (PISA) has become widely recognized as a powerful platform technology for the rational design and efficient synthesis of a wide range of block copolymer nano‐objects. In this study, PISA is used to prepare a new thermoresponsive poly(N‐
- Shining new light on multifunctional lanthanide single‐molecule magnetsSingle‐molecule magnets (SMMs) are at the forefront of new technological advances in quantum information processing and spintronics. Despite the recent impressive breakthroughs in extending the magnetic blocking temperatures beyond liquid nitrogen temperatures, significant challenges await in terms of integrating and addressing such compounds in devices. With this ultimate goal in mind, the design of multifunctional SMMs not only allows to imbue
- Interplay between J‐ and H‐type coupling in aggregates of π‐conjugated polymers: a single‐molecule perspectiveStrong dipole‐dipole coupling within and between π‐conjugated segments shifts electronic transitions, and modifies vibronic coupling and excited‐state lifetimes. Since J‐type coupling between monomers along the chain and H‐type coupling of chromophores between chains compete, a superposition of the spectral modifications arising from each type of coupling emerges, making the two couplings hard to discern in the ensemble. We introduce a single‐mol
- Cyclic (alkyl)(boryl)germylene derived from cyclic (alkyl)(amino)germyleneCyclic (alkyl)(amino)germylene 1 undergoes a ring expansion reaction with dibromomesitylborane (MesBBr 2 ) to afford a six‐membered dibromogermane derivative 2 . In the presence of Lewis bases (PMe 3 or Me NHC), reduction of 2 with two equivalents of potassium graphite (KC 8 ) gives rise to cyclic (alkyl)(boryl)germylene‐base adducts 3 and 4 , respectively. Upon heating, compound 3 reacts with H 2 to yield the germane 6 ,
- Copernicium is a Relativistic Noble LiquidThe chemical nature and aggregate state of copernicium (Cn) have been subject of speculation for many years. While strong relativistic effects render Cn chemically inert, which led Pitzer to suggest a noble‐gas‐like behavior in 1975, Eichler and coworkers in 2008 reported substantial interactions with a gold surface and suggested a metallic character with a solid aggregate state based on atom‐at‐a‐time experiments. Here, we explore the physicoche
- Arene Trifunctionalization with Highly Fused Ring Systems through Domino Aryne Nucleophilic, Diels‐Alder CascadeA convenient and efficient domino aryne process was developed under transition metal‐free conditions, featuring a group of tetra‐ and pentacyclic ring systems. This transformation was realized by a 1,2‐benzdiyne‐involved nucleophilic, Diels‐Alder reaction cascade using styrene as diene moiety. Three new chemical bonds, namely one C‐N and two C‐C bonds, and two benzofused rings could be concomitantly constructed, which was made possible by distinc

- Visible‐Light‐Driven N‐Heterocyclic Carbene‐catalyzed γ‐ and ε‐Alkylation with Alkyl RadicalsThe merging of photoredox catalysis and N‐heterocyclic carbene (NHC) catalysis for γ‐ and ε‐alkylation of enals with alkyl radicals was developed. The alkylation reaction of γ‐oxidized enals with alkyl halides worked well for the synthesis γ‐multisubstituted‐α,β‐unsaturated esters, including those with challenging vicinal all‐carbon quaternary centers. The synthesis of ε‐multisubstituted‐α,β‐γ,δ‐diunsaturated esters via unprecedented NHC‐catalyz

- Carboxyl as a Remote‐selective Chelating Group for C−H Activation of ArenesThe first example of carboxyl group assisted, remote‐selective C(sp 2 )−H activation with a Pd II ‐catalyst has been developed via possible κ 2 coordination of the carboxyl, suppressing the ortho‐C−H activation via the κ 1 coordination. Besides meta ‐C−H olefination, direct meta ‐arylation of hydrocinnamic acid derivatives with low‐cost aryl iodides has been achieved for the first time. These findings may stimulate the exploration
- Quantification of the charge consuming phenomena under high voltage hold of carbon/carbon supercapacitors by coupling operando and post‐mortem analysesEnhancing the operating voltage of supercapacitors (SCs), hence their specific energy, is an important research objective. However, long‐term hold at high voltage entails loss of capacitance, increase of resistance and internal pressure. Such detrimental effects could be reduced by obtaining quantitative information on the relative impact of the various mechanisms leading to the worsening of the SCs performance. Here, on the example of a carbon/c
- Asymmetric hybrid polyoxometalates: a new platform for multifunctional redox‐active nanomaterialsAccess to asymmetrically functionalised polyoxometalates is a grand challenge as it could lead to new molecular nanomaterials with multiple or modular functionality. Here, a simple “one‐pot” synthetic approach to the isolation of an asymmetrically functionalised organic‐inorganic hybrid Wells‐Dawson polyoxometalate in good yield is presented. The cluster bears two organophosphonate moieties with contrasting physical properties: a chelating metal‐
- Surface Capping Agents and Their Roles in Shape‐Controlled Synthesis of Colloidal Metal NanocrystalsControlling the shapes and related properties of colloidal metal nanocrystals are key to the realization of their vast applications. Surface capping agents, including neutral molecules, ionic species, macromolecules, and biomolecules, have been extensively used to control the evolution of seeds into nanocrystals with diverse but well‐controlled shapes. Here we offer a comprehensive review of these agents, with a focus on the mechanistic understan
- Selective Late‐Stage Sulfonyl Chloride Formation from Sulfonamides Enabled by Pyry‐BF4Here we report a simple and practical functionalization of primary sulfonamides by means of a pyrylium salt (Pyry‐BF 4 ) with nucleophiles. This simple reagent is capable of activating the poorly nucleophilic NH 2 group in a sulfonamide thus enabling the formation of one of the best electrophiles in organic synthesis: a sulfonyl chloride. Due to the great variety of primary sulfonamides in pharmaceutical contexts, special attention has been p

- Li‐N2 Batteries: A Reversible Energy Storage System?Tremendous energy consumption is required for traditional artificial N 2 fixation, leading to additional environmental pollution. Recently, new Li‐N 2 batteries have inextricably integrated the energy storage system with N 2 fixation. In this work, we introduced graphene into Li‐N 2 batteries and enhanced the cyclic stability. However, the instability and hygroscopicity of the discharge product Li 3 N lead to a rechargeable but irrevers

- What Did the Moon Landing Do for Archaeology?By now, with all of the retrospectives, books, and stories that have appeared attendant upon the 50th anniversary of Apollo 11’s landing on the moon, you’d think we’d know better. NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration, created in 1958) did not invent Tang and Velcro for the Apollo missions. It is true that the moon landing has created many products that have found places in our scholarly and personal lives today. I’ve used a space b
