Young Male Presenting with an Acute Diarrheal Illness with Unexplained Transudative Ascites: An Atypical Presentation of Appendicular Tuberculosis
Introduction. Appendicular tuberculosis is a rare form of extrapulmonary tuberculosis involving the gastrointestinal tract. Diagnosis of appendicular tuberculosis is difficult due to its atypical presentation. Histological confirmation remains the gold standard in diagnosis. Case Presentation. We report a 37-year-old Sri Lankan male presenting with a diarrheal illness with high fever for 8 days in the background of constitutional symptoms for 1-month duration. He was pale and had moderate amount...

TNF‐α‐dependent lung inflammation upregulates superoxide dismutase‐2 to promote tumor cell proliferation in lung adenocarcinoma
Abstract Manganese superoxide dismutase (SOD‐2), an important primary antioxidant enzyme located in mitochondria, plays a critical role in tumor progression. Reportedly, the proinflammatory cytokine, tumor necrosis factor (TNF)‐α, can increase SOD‐2 expression in a human lung adenocarcinoma cell line in vitro, indicating that TNF‐α‐mediated inflammation may regulate SOD‐2 expression, which may be related to cancer promotion. Using a urethane‐induced inflammation‐driven lung adenocarcinoma (IDLA)...

Incidentally detected sellar spine in a patient with Cushing’s syndrome: a case report
Journal of International Medical Research, Volume 48, Issue 7, July 2020. Sellar spine, a bony spur extending anteriorly from the dorsum sellae, is a very rare anatomical variant. Several hypotheses regarding its etiology have been proposed, including the strongly supported theory of a cephalic ossified notochordal remnant. Sellar spine is usually detected incidentally in patients who have no definite symptoms, but several cases have reportedly accompanied endocrinopathies such as precocious puberty,...

Journal of International Medical Research, Volume 48, Issue 7, July 2020. BackgroundA true accessory extensor tendon of the thumb seems to be rare. We found a variation of the accessory extensor pollicis longus (EPL) tendon while performing an emergency surgical procedure. Identification of this accessory tendon during emergency surgery has not been previously reported.Case presentation: A 43-year-old man presented to our hospital after sustaining a work-related injury involving a saw. Vitamin D levels in children and adolescents with autism
Journal of International Medical Research, Volume 48, Issue 7, July 2020. ObjectiveThis study aimed to investigate the relationship between autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and vitamin D levels in children and adolescents.MethodsWe measured serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25-OHD) levels in 1529 patients with ASD aged 3 to 18 years, without any additional chronic diseases. Levels of 25-OHD were compared according to sex, age (<11 or ≥11 years), and birth season. Additionally, laboratory parameters (calcium,...

New World Health Organization classification of odontogenic tumours: impact on the prevalence of odontogenic tumours and analysis of 1231 cases from Turkey
The aims of this study were to describe the frequency of odontogenic tumours (OT) based on the World Health Organization (WHO) 4th edition of Head and Neck Tumours in Turkey, to compare the results with other regions and to assess the frequency changes of OT worldwide after the new WHO classification. OT were selected from the pathology departments’ files between 1971-2018. In a total of 1231 OT, 1215 (98.7%) were benign, whereas malignant OT were only 16 cases (1.3%). The three most common tumours...

Comparison of intraoperative outcomes with single and double puncture techniques of arthrocentesis of the temporomandibular joint
Evidence of differences in operator-related outcomes between single and double puncture arthrocentesis is limited. The purpose of this prospective study was to compare intraoperative outcomes with single puncture types 1 and 2, and double puncture, arthrocentesis. A total of 59 patients with 60 temporomandibular joints (TMJ) were treated sequentially by single puncture type 1 (n=20), single puncture type 2 (n=20), and double puncture arthrocentesis (n=20). Total operating time, incidence of dislocation...

Evaluation of remote OMFS assessments in the era of pandemic COVID-19 control measures
Pandemic COVID-19 has put unprecedented pressure on NHS providers to offer non face-to-face consultation. This study aims to assess acceptability of patients and clinicians towards teleconsultation in oral and maxillofacial surgery compared with an expected face-to-face assessment. 340 telephone clinic patient episodes were surveyed over the initial 7-week period of pandemic-related service restriction. Appointment outcomes from a further 420 telephone consultations were additionally scrutinised.

Boron neutron capture therapy for malignant brain tumors
Abstract Background Boron neutron capture therapy (BNCT) is tumor-selective particle radiation therapy that depends on the nuclear capture and fission reactions. These reactions occur when a non-radioactive boron isotope (10B) is irradiated with low-energy thermal neutrons to yield high linear energy transfer α-particles and lithium-7 nuclei within a limited path length, i.e., an almost one-cell diameter. The 10B-containing cells can...

Novel coronavirus epidemic in the Hungarian population, a cross-sectional nationwide survey to support the exit policy in Hungary
Abstract After months of restrictive containment efforts to fight the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) epidemic, European countries are planning to reopen. To support the process, we conducted a cross-sectional survey among the Hungarian population to estimate the prevalence of infectious cases and prior SARS-CoV-2 exposure. A representative sample (n = 17,787) for the Hungarian population of 14 years or older living in private households (n = 8,283,810)...

Prognostic and Clinicopathological Significance of PD-L1 in Patients with Cholangiocarcinoma: A Meta-Analysis
Background. In recent years, there is growing literature on the prognostic significance of programmed death-ligand 1 (PD-L1) in cholangiocarcinoma (CCA); however, data have been conflicting. Therefore, the objective of this study was to assess the correlation between PD-L1 and prognosis in CCA through meta-analysis. Methods. Published studies were retrieved from the Web of Science, PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane Library up to April 17, 2020. The relationships between PD-L1 expression and survival outcomes...

Follow-up after radiological intervention in oncology: ECIO-ESOI evidence and consensus-based recommendations for clinical practice
Abstract Interventional radiology plays an important and increasing role in cancer treatment. Follow-up is important to be able to assess treatment success and detect locoregional and distant recurrence and recommendations for follow-up are needed. At ECIO 2018, a joint ECIO-ESOI session was organized to establish follow-up recommendations for oncologic intervention in liver, renal, and lung cancer. Treatments included thermal ablation, TACE, and TARE. In total five topics were...
