Holding ourselves to a higher standard: “Language-independent” just doesn’t cut it
My CACM blog post this month (see link here) is a retraction of the term “language-independent” in our work on the FCS1 and SCS1: There is no language independence here. The FCS1 and SCS1 are multi-lingual which is a remarkable achievement. We might also call them pseudcode-based assessments, which is how they can be multi-lingual, but since a pseudocode-based test isn’t necessarily validated across other languages, “multi-lingual” is a stronger claim than “pseudocode-based.” We do not cover all of...

Validation of microRNA expression profile in Oral Lichenoid Disease through cytological samples.
CONCLUSIONS: This is the first time that oral exfoliative cytology is validated in a study of the alterations of the expression of microRNAs in OLD. The alteration of miR-146a and miR-7 compared to controls was validated. These microRNAs are associated with both inflammatory and carcinogenic phenomena that are involved in the etiopathogenesis of this potentially malignant oral disorder. The Male Voice: A Qualitative Assessment of Young Men ’s Communication Preferences About HPV and 9vHPV
AbstractIn the U.S. there is an epidemic of sexually transmitted diseases (STIs). One of the most prevalent STIs is the Human Papillomavirus (HPV). Certain high risk strains of HPV are believed to cause virtually all cervical cancers, over 90% of anal cancers, 70% of oropharyngeal cancers, and the majority of anal  genital warts. HPV is preventable through vaccination and is available for both men and women. Several educational interventions have been employed, yet baseline awareness and knowledge...

74. Trends in utilization of radiotherapy for spinal meningiomas: insights from the 2004-2015 National Cancer Database
Meningiomas are one of the most frequently encountered tumor types in the spinal cord, accounting for 20-25% of all spine tumors. Treatment strategies may include observation (active surveillance), surgical excision, radiotherapy/radiosurgery or combination of modalities. Surgery continues to be the most frequently utilized treatment modality, but radiotherapy is also an available treatment option most commonly reserved for high grade or recurrent lesions. Moreover, recent studies have reported on...

Despite our inability to accurately predict survival in cancer patients, a life expectancy of at least three months is historically considered necessary for patients to be considered for surgical treatment of spinal metastases. With a wealth of new surgical and radiation technologies available, why would someone with incapacitating mechanical pain and/or progressive neurological deficit be denied treatment because their life expectancy is believed to be less than 3 months? P49. Treatment preferences for patients with metastatic spine disease with indeterminate spinal instability neoplastic scores (SINS 7-12)
As the survival of cancer patients increases, so has the incidence of metastatic spine disease (MSD). While surgical stabilization has demonstrated improved outcomes for some patients, there is also increased perioperative morbidity. The Spine Instability Neoplastic Score (SINS) assigns values to clinical and radiographic findings, providing recommendations for surgical stabilization. Scores12 are best treated with surgical stabilization. (Source: The Spine Journal)

2017 Research Grant: NF1 and KEAP1 mutations are correlated to increased rates of local failure after radiation therapy for spine metastases from non-small cell lung cancer
The spine is a common site of metastasis from non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), a disease hallmarked by heterogeneity in molecular alterations. Traditional spine radiation treatment (RT) with conventionally fractionated external beam radiation therapy (cEBRT) is associated with high local failure (LF) rates in patients surviving more than 12 months. Treatment with advanced techniques including stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT) significantly reduces LF. We hypothesized that specific genomic...

Gastrointestinal polyps are mucosal overgrowths that, if unchecked, can undergo malignant transformation. Although relatively uncommon in the pediatric age group, they can be the harbingers of multiorgan cancer risk and require close management and follow-up.
