Perceptions of Sexual Harassment in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Training and Practice
Despite increased awareness of sexually harassing behaviors (SHB) and national movements such as #MeToo, SHB remains a persistent problem for women training in medical and surgical fields. The aims of this study were to: 1) estimate the prevalence and nature of SHB in a set of female OMS residents and practicing surgeons in the United States, 2) measure and describe the subjective effects of SHB on the professional development of female OMS, and 3) measure the effect of SHB education in training programs and its association with prevalence.
Does the CHOP Modification Improve Fistula Rate in Furlow Double-Opposing Z-Plasty?
Oronasal fistulae (ONF) are the most common complications of primary cleft palatoplasty. This study evaluated the incidence of ONF after primary standard Furlow and modified Furlow palatoplasty and a buccal fat pad flap (BFPF) as a viable tissue layer to facilitate wound healing.
Ankyloglossia Superior associated with Moebius Syndrome: a case report
Ankyloglossia superior is an exceedingly rare congenital condition consisting of a connection between the tongue and hard palate. This abnormality is considered part of ankyloglossia superior syndrome when found together with other malformations such as limb deformities, gastrointestinal malformation and cleft palate. Ankyloglossia superior can also be associated with other known syndromes. The authors present the case of a female infant born with multiple malformations including partial agenesis of the feet and hands, micrognathia, lack of expression of the facial muscles, convergent strabismus, limitation of mouth opening and tongue-palate adhesion.
Does Including Dexmedetomidine Improve Outcomes After IV Sedation for Outpatient Dentoalveolar Surgery?
Dexmedetomidine represents an intriguing adjunct to outpatient intravenous (IV) Sedation due to its decreased respiratory depression. The purpose of this study is to measure the incremental effect of incorporating dexmedetomidine (here after abbreviated as “D”) into an established IV sedation regimen in comparison to a control IV sedation appointment without the infusion.
Comparison of internal jugular vein system anastomosis and external jugular vein system anastomosis in free flaps for head and neck reconstruction: A meta-analysis
The purpose of this study was to investigate the differences in postoperative thrombosis and flap failure between internal jugular vein (IJV) system anastomosis and external jugular vein (EJV) system anastomosis in free flaps for the reconstruction of head and neck defects.
Inferior Maxillary Repositioning Remains Stable 1 Year after Surgery but Entails a High Risk of Osteosynthesis Failure
Inferior maxillary repositioning is among the most unstable orthognathic procedures. The overall purpose of this study was to measure skeletal stability after inferior maxillary repositioning.
Oral Functional Behaviors and Neurosensation after Long-term Adult Maxillomandibular Advancement for Obstructive Sleep Apnea
Evaluate and correlate long-term subjective peri-oral neurosensory deficit intensity and oral functional behavior difficulty after maxillomandibular advancement (MMA) in adult obstructive sleep apnea (OSA).
Nasal Sebaceous Carcinoma; A Case Report and Review of the Literature.
Sebaceous carcinoma arising from the nasal vestibule is exceedingly rare, with 3 cases published in the literature. This report illustrates a case of a 69-year-old man with an indolent exophytic growth on the medial aspect of his right nasal vestibule. Incisional biopsy demonstrated sebaceous carcinoma. The clinical and pathologic features, in addition to surgical course and the postoperative outcome are discussed. A case based on a review of the literature is presented, focusing on the diagnosis and treatment of this rare skin malignancy.
Are oral and maxillofacial surgeons prescribing fewer opioids and more non-narcotic analgesics for post-operative pain after third molar removal?
In response to the national opioid epidemic crisis, this study’s purpose was to measure changes in opioid and non-narcotic analgesic (NNA) prescribing practices over time after third molar (M3) removal.
Enhanced recovery after head and neck cancer reconstruction with a free flap – what is next?
Enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS), or fast-track surgery, was described almost 20 years ago1 as a peri- and postoperative care concept with the aim of achieving “the pain and risk-free operation”. Post-operative recovery is improved by shortening hospital stay and reducing medical complications without increasing the risk of surgery-related complications and readmissions.1
