Animals undergoing dietary restriction were better protected against tumors and bacterial infections than those with unrestricted diets. Researchers restricted diets of mice for up to four weeks and found they had more robust T cell immune responses and were better protected from illness and tumors.

What would a world without jobs be like ? And do most people hate their jobs ?
Would it be different if we had good welfare policies like universal healthcare , universal higher education and public Unemployment benefits ? And if most jobs didn't require a degree and there were vocational schools and job training schools for those jobs instead of College being the main requirement ? Would then more people take jobs that they're interested in Instead of taking jobs they don't like out of worry of not having healthcare etc ? I don't think financial incentives and employee benefits...

Diversity-triggered deterministic bacterial assembly constrains community functions
Nature Communications, Published online: 23 August 2019; doi:10.1038/s41467-019-11787-5The role of microbial β-diversity in soil ecosystem function is not well-studied. Here, the authors use genetic data to show that microbial α-diversity levels may have impacts on stochastic/deterministic assembly processes and functions of soil microbiome.

Development of a SFTSV DNA vaccine that confers complete protection against lethal infection in ferrets
Nature Communications, Published online: 23 August 2019; doi:10.1038/s41467-019-11815-4Severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome virus (SFTSV) is an emerging tick-borne virus with no specific treatment or vaccine available. Here, the authors develop a DNA vaccine for SFTSV that is protective against lethal challenge in ferrets and show that anti-envelope antibodies are important for protection.

Pioneer and nonpioneer factor cooperation drives lineage specific chromatin opening
Nature Communications, Published online: 23 August 2019; doi:10.1038/s41467-019-11791-9Pioneer transcription factor Pax7 specifies melanotrope cells, which then allows for the binding of Tpit transcription factor. Here, authors find that while binding of heterochromatin targeting by Pax7 is independent of Tpit, Pax7-dependent chromatin opening requires Tpit.

Rebalancing of actomyosin contractility enables mammary tumor formation upon loss of E-cadherin
Nature Communications, Published online: 23 August 2019; doi:10.1038/s41467-019-11716-6E-cadherin is a well-known tumor suppressor albeit loss of E-cadherin alone is insufficient to induce mammary tumorigenesis. Here the authors report that epithelial cells that have lost E-cadherin can survive by extruding to the basal lamina but require rebalancing of actomyosin contractility to drive tumor development.

Photocatalytic enantioselective α-aminoalkylation of acyclic imine derivatives by a chiral copper catalyst
Nature Communications, Published online: 23 August 2019; doi:10.1038/s41467-019-11688-7Copper-based asymmetric photocatalysis has great synthetic potential, however it has been rarely exploited due to challenges inherent to such systems. Here, a chiral bisoxazoline copper catalyst is involved in a SET process, photoredox catalysis, Lewis acid activation and asymmetric induction to construct chiral vicinal diamines.

Equivalence and its invalidation between non-Markovian and Markovian spreading dynamics on complex networks
Nature Communications, Published online: 23 August 2019; doi:10.1038/s41467-019-11763-zWhen modelling epidemic spreading on complex networks, one useful simplification is to assume that the dynamics are Markovian, i.e. memoryless. Here the authors present a more general non-Markovian approach which is able to accurately reproduce the transient and stationary regime on different substrates.

TriQuinoline
Nature Communications, Published online: 23 August 2019; doi:10.1038/s41467-019-11818-1In this paper, the authors introduce a structurally elegant 2D triquinoline molecule as a discrete model for graphitic materials with atom-sized voids. The compound has unusual chemical properties, including high proton affinity and rich supramolecular behavior, forming complexes via both π-π and CH-π contact modes.

Antioxidant and Cardioprotective Effects of EPA on Early Low-Severity Sepsis through UCP3 and SIRT3 Upholding of the Mitochondrial Redox Potential
Sepsis still causes death, often through cardiac failure and mitochondrial dysfunction. Dietary ω3 polyunsaturated fatty acids are known to protect against cardiac dysfunction and sepsis lethality. This study set out to determine whether early low-severity sepsis alters the cardiac mitochondrial function in animals fed a Western-type diet and whether dietary eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) administration protects the myocardium against the deleterious effects of sepsis and if so to seek possible mechanisms...

Sesamin Enhances Nrf2-Mediated Protective Defense against Oxidative Stress and Inflammation in Colitis via AKT and ERK Activation
Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a major form of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) with high incidence and prevalence in many countries. Patients with UC usually suffer from a lifetime of debilitating physical symptoms. Therefore, developing effective therapeutic strategy that can manage this disease better and improve patients’ life quality is in urgent need. Sesamin (SSM) is a lignan derived from sesame seeds. In this study, the protective effect of SSM against UC and the underlying mechanism were investigated...

Chloramphenicol Mitigates Oxidative Stress by Inhibiting Translation of Mitochondrial Complex I in Dopaminergic Neurons of Toxin-Induced Parkinson’s Disease Model
Paraquat (PQ), an herbicide considered an environmental contributor to the development of Parkinson’s disease (PD), induces dopaminergic neuronal loss through reactive oxygen species (ROS) production and oxidative stress by mitochondrial complex I. Most patients with PQ-induced PD are affected by chronic exposure and require a preventive strategy for modulation of disease progression. To identify drugs that are effective in preventing PD, we screened more than 1000 drugs that are currently used in...

Medicinal Plants from Brazilian Cerrado: Antioxidant and Anticancer Potential and Protection against Chemotherapy Toxicity
The use of natural antioxidants in cancer therapy has increased: first, due to the potential of natural antioxidants to kill tumour cells and second, because of their capacity to protect healthy cells from the damage caused by chemotherapy. This review article discusses the antioxidant properties of extracts obtained from medicinal plants from the Brazilian Cerrado and the cell death profile induced by each of these extracts in malignant cells. Next, we describe the capacity of other medicinal plants...

Gender Inequality, Maternal Mortality and Inclusive Growth in Nigeria
Abstract The relevance of women in contributing to inclusive growth and consequently economic development in Nigeria cannot be overemphasized. Women play important social, economic and productive roles in any economy. Maternal mortality rate refers to the annual number of deaths of women from pregnancy-related causes per 100,000 live births, and Nigeria’s rate is still relatively high at about 630 when compared with the figures of the developed countries. For inclusive growth to...

Integration and Subjective Well-Being Among Off-Site University Students
Abstract This study addresses an intriguing issue: does social integration impact on self-reported happiness? Can segregation overwhelm the effects of other determinants claimed to positively affect people’s well-being? Research on this topic normally focuses on racial-based segregation and international migration. This paper calls the attention to what happens when integration involves well-off internal migrants, i.e. off-site university students. Using survey data, we conduct...

Differences in the Environmental, Social and Economic Development of Polish–Lithuanian Trans-Border Regions
Abstract Regional development is a complex process that can be analysed in various contexts, including environmental, social and economic factors. Variations in the levels of development are naturally observed across countries and regions, but they play a special role in trans-border regions. The aim of this study is to investigate differences in the level of development of two Polish voivodships (Warmia and Mazury, and Podlasie) and two Lithuanian counties (Marijampolė and Alytus)...
