Development of an EMG-Controlled Knee Exoskeleton to Assist Home Rehabilitation in a Game Context
As a leading cause of loss of functional movement, stroke often makes it difficult for patients to walk. Interventions to aid motor recovery in stroke patients should be carried out as a matter of urgency. However, muscle activity in the knee is usually too weak to generate overt movements, which poses a challenge for early post-stroke rehabilitation training. Although electromyography (EMG)-controlled exoskeletons have the potential to solve this problem, most existing robotic devices in rehabilitation...

Automated Instability Detection for Interactive Myocontrol of Prosthetic Hands
Myocontrol is control of a prosthetic device by a disabled user using data obtained non- or minimally-invasively from (residual) muscle activity. In most myocontrol prosthetic systems, such biological data also denote the subject’s intent: reliably interpreting what the user wants to do, exactly and only when she wants, is paramount to avoid instability, potentially leading to accidents, humiliation and trauma. Indeed, instability manifests itself as a failure of the myocontrol in interpreting the...

Whole-body magnetic resonance imaging in paediatric Hodgkin lymphoma — evaluation of quantitative magnetic resonance metrics for nodal staging
Abstract Background Whole-body MRI is used for staging paediatric Hodgkin lymphoma, commonly using size thresholds, which fail to detect disease in normal-size lymph nodes. Objective To investigate quantitative whole-body MRI metrics for nodal characterisation. Materials and...

The current status of non-radiologist-performed abdominal ultrasonography in paediatrics – a scoping literature review protocol
Abstract In recent years as a result of decreasing prices and the increasing availability of portable systems, ultrasonography (US), which historically has primarily been the domain of radiologists, has become more widely available to non-radiologists as well. This has increased the use of point-of-care paediatric US performed by non-radiologists. With this scoping review, focused on abdominal imaging, we aim to gain an overview of the current practices in the paediatric setting...

Analysis of ovarian volume of Korean children and adolescents at magnetic resonance imaging
Abstract Background Knowledge of ovarian volume is important for diagnostic evaluations; however, normal ovarian volume studies on children and adolescents are lacking. Objective This study aimed to analyze age-specific ovarian volume and identify the diverse factors that contribute to ovarian diagnoses. ...

Intravenous gadolinium-based hepatocyte-specific contrast agents (HSCAs) for contrast-enhanced liver magnetic resonance imaging in pediatric patients: what the radiologist should know
Abstract Hepatocyte-specific contrast agents (HSCAs) are a group of intravenous gadolinium-based MRI contrast agents that can be used to characterize hepatobiliary pathology. The mechanism by which these agents are taken up by hepatocytes and partially excreted into the biliary tree improves characterization of hepatic lesions and biliary abnormalities relative to conventional extracellular gadolinium-based contrast agents (GBCAs). This manuscript presents an overview of HSCA...

TNBG ‐5602, a novel derivative of quinoxaline, inhibits liver cancer growth via upregulating peroxisome proliferator‐activated receptor γ in vitro and in vivo
ConclusionsOur results suggested that TNBG ‐5602 might exert potent anticancer activity through increasing the expression of PPARγ. (Source: Journal of Pharmacy and Pharmacology)

The Tip of the Iceberg? Budget Restrictions and Patient Perspectives on Cancer Drug Costs: An international survey in 29 hospitals and 56 patient organizations
ConclusionOur findings revealed the lack of systematic approach towards purchasing agreements, and a limited use of potentially powerful mechanisms such as joint negotiations. Furthermore, a large majority of patient representatives (79%) and providers (66%) indicated that the drug cost issue is likely to influence treatments decisions. Access issues and coverage delays seem to be present in all countries regardless of level of GDP. (Source: Journal of Cancer Policy)MedWorm Message: If you are looking...

CD4 + T cells indirectly kill tumor cells via induction of cytotoxic macrophages in mouse models
AbstractIt is well recognized that CD4+ T cells may play an important role in immunosurveillance and immunotherapy against cancer. However, the details of how these cells recognize and eliminate the tumor cells remain incompletely understood. For the past 25  years, we have focused on how CD4+ T cells reject multiple myeloma cells in a murine model (MOPC315). In our experimental system, the secreted tumor-specific antigen is taken up by tumor-infiltrating macrophages that process it and present a...

Cancers, Vol. 11, Pages 1247: Multifaceted Regulation of PTEN Subcellular Distributions and Biological Functions
Authors: Tian Liu Yiwei Wang Yubing Wang Andrew M. Chan Phosphatase and tensin homolog deleted on chromosome 10 (PTEN) is a tumor suppressor gene frequently found to be inactivated in over 30% of human cancers. PTEN encodes a 54-kDa lipid phosphatase that serves as a gatekeeper of the phosphoinositide 3-kinase pathway involved in the promotion of multiple pro-tumorigenic phenotypes. Although the PTEN protein plays a pivotal role in carcinogenesis, cumulative evidence has implicated...

Antibody targeting tumor-derived soluble NKG2D ligand sMIC provides dual co-stimulation of CD8 T cells and enables sMIC + tumors respond to PD1/PD-L1 blockade therapy
ConclusionOur findings provide the proof-of-concept rationale and previously undiscovered mechanisms for co-targeting sMIC to enable and enhance the response to PD1/PD-L1 blockade therapy in sMIC+ cancer patients. (Source: Journal for Immunotherapy of Cancer)

Radiotherapy after skin-sparing mastectomy with immediate breast reconstruction in intermediate-risk breast cancer
ConclusionsFor intermediate-risk as well as early stage high-risk BC patients, the DEGRO Breast Cancer Expert Panel recommends the use of PMRT following SSME and NSME when a  10-year locoregional recurrence risk is likely to be greater than 10%, as estimated by clinical and biological risk factors. Subvolume-only radiation is discouraged outside of trials. The impact of adequate systemic treatment and the value of radiotherapy on optimal locoregional tumor control, wit h the goal of less than 5%...

Risk factors predisposing to cardia gastric adenocarcinoma: Insights and new perspectives
The etiology of adenocarcinoma of the cardia and the gastroesophageal junction (GEJ) is not known and is doubted. It is thought that cardia gastric adenocarcinoma (CGA) is distinct from adenocarcinomas located in the esophagus or distal stomach, both epidemiologically and biologically. Moreover, CGA is often identified in the advanced stage having a poor prognosis. In this paper, we would like to ascertain the possible role of GC family history, lifestyle, demographics, gastroesophageal reflux disease,Helicobacter...

Survival benefit of palliative gastrectomy followed by chemotherapy in stage IV gastric signet ring cell carcinoma patients: A large population ‐based study
ConclusionsOur results suggested that there exists at least a selective group of stage IV gastric SRCC patients, who could benefit from palliative gastrectomy followed by chemotherapy compared to chemotherapy alone. Further prospective trials are needed to support our conclusion.
