Oncostatin M, a muscle-secreted myokine, recovers high-glucose-induced impairment of Akt phosphorylation by Fos induction in hippocampal neuron cells
Oncostatin M is a muscle-secreted myokine that has various effects on neuronal function, however, the underlying molecular mechanism has been poorly defined. In this study, we showed that Oncostatin M increased the phosphorylation of Akt and ERK, proteins crucial for neuron cell survival and proliferation. Furthermore, Oncostatin M increased the expression of c-Fos, a protein with significant involvement in neuronal cell proliferation and survival, through both Akt and ERK. Oncostatin M also increased...

Pituitary Adenoma Concomitant with Chiari I Malformation: Case Report and Literature Review
Publication date: September 2019Source: World Neurosurgery, Volume 129Author(s): Juan F. Villalonga, Martin Pilonieta, Juan M. Revuelta Barbero, Ricardo L. Carrau, Daniel M. PrevedelloBackgroundPituitary adenomas (PA) are usually benign neoplasms. Chiari I malformation (CIM) is an uncommon finding. Isolated cases associating functional PA and CIM have been reported. The concomitant presence of a nonfunctional PA and a CIM has not yet been described in the literature.Case DescriptionWe present the...

Experimental Model for Interlaminar Endoscopic Spine Procedures
Publication date: September 2019Source: World Neurosurgery, Volume 129Author(s): Marcelo Campos Moraes Amato, Bruno César Aprile, Cezar Augusto de Oliveira, Vinicius Marques Carneiro, Ricardo Santos de OliveiraBackgroundEndoscopic spinal surgery is becoming quite popular, and the pursuit of a training model to improve surgeons' skills is imperative to overcome the limited availability of human cadavers. Our goal was to determine whether the porcine spine could be a representative model for learning...

A Novel Percutaneous Biportal Endoscopic Technique for Symptomatic Spinal Epidural Lipomatosis: Technical Note and Case Presentations
Publication date: September 2019Source: World Neurosurgery, Volume 129Author(s): Sang-Soo Kang, Su-Chan Lee, Seung-Kook KimObjectiveTo describe a minimally invasive decompression technique for symptomatic spinal epidural lipomatosis using percutaneous biportal endoscopic surgery.MethodsIn this report, we describe the indirect decompressive effect that was gained by partial laminotomy and ligamentum flavectomy under biportal endoscopic view. Direct neural decompression was then performed by removal...

Skull Base Enchondroma and Chondrosarcoma in Ollier Disease and Maffucci Syndrome
Publication date: Available online 22 June 2019Source: World NeurosurgeryAuthor(s): Soliman Oushy, Maria Peris-Celda, Jamie J. Van GompelAbstractBackgroundMaffucci syndrome (MS) and Ollier disease (OD) are rare diseases characterized by multiple benign enchondromas. Incidence of skull base (SB) enchondromas and the risk of malignant transformation remain unknown. Most SB lesions are asymptomatic and surgical resection carries significant morbidity. Observation may be a reasonable strategy. We report...
