Formation of disinfection byproducts during Fenton’s oxidation of chloride-rich landfill leachate
Publication date: 15 January 2020Source: Journal of Hazardous Materials, Volume 382Author(s): Syeed Md Iskander, Teng Zeng, Elizabeth Smiley, Stephanie C. Bolyard, John T. Novak, Zhen HeAbstractBecause of the production of chlorine species in leachate during Fenton’s oxidation, harmful disinfection byproducts (DBP) can be formed but this has not been well studied before. Herein, we have investigated five classes of DBP: trihalomethanes, haloacetic acids, haloacetonitriles, haloketones, and halonitromethanes...

Stellate Cells, Hepatocytes, and Endothelial Cells Imprint the Kupffer Cell Identity on Monocytes Colonizing the Liver Macrophage Niche
Bonnardel and colleagues tracked monocytes differentiating into Kupffer cells and mapped the cellular interactions imprinting their identity. Monocytes transmigrated into the perisinusoidal space. Interactions with endothelial and stellate cells induced LXR-α via the NOTCH-BMP pathway. Hepatocytes induced ID3. Thus, stellate cells, hepatocytes, and endothelial cells compose the Kupffer cell niche.

Discrepancies in Hearing Thresholds between Pure-Tone Audiometry and Auditory Steady-State Response in Non-Malingerers
Objectives: To evaluate discrepancies between pure-tone audiometry (PTA) and auditory steady state response (ASSR) tests in non-malingerers and investigate brain lesions that may explain the discrepancies, especially in cases where the PTA threshold was worse than the estimated ASSR threshold. Design: PTA, speech audiometry, auditory brainstem response, ASSR, and neuroimaging tests were carried out on individuals selected from 995 cases of hearing impairment. Among these, medical records...

Implications of habitual endurance and resistance exercise for dynamic cerebral autoregulation
New Findings •What is the central question of this study? Does habitual resistance and endurance exercise modify dynamic cerebral autoregulation? •What is the main finding and its importance? To the authors’ knowledge, this is the first study to directly assess dynamic cerebral autoregulation in resistance‐trained individuals, and potential differences between exercise training modalities. Forced oscillations in blood pressure were induced by repeated squat‐stands, from which dynamic cerebral...

Novel Use of Impedance Technology Shows that Esophageal Air Events Can Be Temporally Associated with GERD-Like Symptoms
A few studies have shown that esophageal air events (EAEs) such as air-swallows may be associated with symptoms that have historically been associated with gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). To objectively test a hypothesis that all EAE types (air swallows, supra-gastric belches and gastric belches) can be associated with GERD-like symptoms, we removed the impedance “tags” from the GER episodes (placed during autoscan) and instead tagged either air-swallows, supra-gastric belches or gastric...
