The utility of longitudinal slicing method for rectal specimen: pathological analysis of circumferential resection margin of intersphincteric resection for low‐lying rectal cancer
Abstract The pathological assessment of the resection margin of rectal cancer is important to predict clinical outcome. The transverse slicing method of rectal specimens is recommended in Western countries. However, in Japan the longitudinal slicing method is traditionally advocated. The aim of this study was to assess the advantages of the longitudinal slicing method. The subjects were 197 consecutive patients with primary rectal cancer who underwent curative intersphincteric resection from 2000...

Whipple’s Disease Affecting Ileal Peyer’s Patches: The First Case Report

How many bones? Every bone in my body
Textbooks frequently report that there are 206 human bones, or 200 bones and six auditory ossicles. The human bone counts in history and within adulthood were reviewed. Tallies of 197 to 307 bones have been reported over the past several centuries. The relatively low modern reckoning of 206 was due to exclusion of teeth and sesamoid ossicles, and to reassessments of the hyoid, sacrum, coccyx and sternum as unitary bones. An audit of bone counts during adulthood failed to confirm a rational justification...

MircoRNA-23b-3p promotes the proliferation, migration, and epithelial–mesenchymal transition of lens epithelial cells by targeting Sprouty2
Publication date: Available online 22 June 2019Source: Acta HistochemicaAuthor(s): Wenlan Liu, Yang Yang, Jin Yan, Li WangAbstractCataract, opacification of the lens, is one of the most important reasons of visual impairment and blindness. Though microRNAs (miRNAs) have been demonstrated to play important roles in cataractogenesis, the underlying molecular mechanisms in this progress remain obscure. In the present study, microRNA-23b-3p (miR-23b) overexpression promoted the proliferation, migration...

Choroidal melanoma diagnosed by aspiration cytology: A case report with cyto-histologic correlation and review of the literature
Publication date: Available online 22 June 2019Source: Annals of Diagnostic PathologyAuthor(s): Daniel W. Abbott, Kenneth Simons, Tarmara GiorgadzeAbstractHistologic and cytologic features of uveal melanomas have been well characterized; however, cytologic-histologic correlation has rarely been described in detail in the literature. A 50-year old female presented at our institution with an intraocular mass which was diagnosed as choroidal melanoma by aspiration cytology. The patient subsequently...

Neuroendocrine tumors of genitourinary tract: Recent advances
Publication date: Available online 21 June 2019Source: Annals of Diagnostic PathologyAuthor(s): Ahmed N. Shehabeldin, Jae Y. RoAbstractPrimary neuroendocrine tumors of the genitourinary tract are rare and are comprised of a heterogeneous group of neoplasms. These include paraganglioma, well-differentiated neuroendocrine tumors or carcinoid tumors, small-cell neuroendocrine carcinoma, and large-cell neuroendocrine carcinoma. Personal experiences, in addition to the findings of an extensive literature...
