Comparison of biological markers in aerosol-weighed workplaces
Abstract Airborne particulates present a potential hazard to health in a variety of indoor workplaces, from offices to the manufacturing floor. Dust and aerosols are two of the most common occupational risk factors in the workplace worldwide. It is very important to understand when it is sufficient to describe dust exposure only by given mass concentration that dust particles could be in the nanosized range in the workplace air even for brief exposures, such as welding aerosols....

Plasmon-enhanced photocatalytic activity of Pt@Au and Pt@Cu nanoparticles in quantum size regime
Abstract We have synthesized Pt@Au and Pt@Cu bimetallic nanoparticles and investigated their surface plasmon resonance (SPR) and plasmon-enhanced photocatalytic activity in the quantum size regime. The SPR wavelength of Pt@Au bimetallic nanoparticles monotonously blue-shifts as the thickness of Pt shell increases comparing with the quantum-sized Au core nanoparticles with diameter dAu = 3.6 ± 0.4 nm. On the other hand, the SPR of Pt@Cu bimetallic nanoparticles blue-shifts at...

Double redox couples manganese oxide nanorods with tunable oxygen defects and their catalytic combustion properties
Abstract The activation process of oxygen is a key step for catalytic oxidation reaction. To accelerate the activation of oxygen, tris-valences manganese oxides with two redox couples of Mn2+/Mn3+ and Mn3+/Mn4+ were constructed. The introduction of Zn promoted an enhanced Mn3+/(Mn2++Mn3++Mn4+) ratio and then produced an appropriate stoichiometric compositions for the Mn2+/Mn3+ and Mn3+/Mn4+ redox couples. The results indicate that oxygen vacancies, as a significant influence...

Fabrication and application of a gold nanoparticle-based colorimetric device for the determination of NaCl in seawater and estuarine water
Abstract Salinity plays an important role in regulating the marine and estuarine ecosystem. In order to understand the effects of salinity in seawater and its influence on nearby estuaries, accurate, rapid, sensitive and selective methods are needed for sodium chloride determination. Therefore, this study offers a colorimetric assay method based on gold nanoparticles (average size of 7 nm) for determining sodium chloride concentrations in seawater and estuarine water. This provides...

Semiconductor behavior of pentagonal silver nanowires measured under mechanical deformation
Abstract In the present work, electrical measurements using in situ transmission electron microscopy (TEM) on pentagonal silver nanowires were performed. Electrical biasing was applied to individual nanowires with and without simultaneous in situ TEM mechanical deformation. The response of the ohmic resistance was measured in the I-V curves. A reduction in the break voltage and the resistance was measured, when the nanowires were subjected to a bending deformation. In situ electric...
