Essential Elements of Natural Language Processing: What the Radiologist Should Know
Publication date: Available online 17 September 2019Source: Academic RadiologyAuthor(s): Po-Hao ChenNatural language is ubiquitous in the workflow of medical imaging. Radiologists create and consume free text in their daily work, some of which can be amenable to enhancements through automatic processing. Recent advancements in deep learning and “artificial intelligence” have had a significant positive impact on natural language processing (NLP). This article discusses the history of how researchers...

Critical individual roles of the BCR and FGFR1 kinase domains in BCR‐FGFR1‐driven stem cell leukemia/lymphoma syndrome
Constitutive activation of FGFR1, as a result of diverse chromosome translocations, is the hallmark of stem cell leukemia/lymphoma syndrome. The BCR‐FGFR1 variant is unique in that the BCR component contributes a serine‐threonine kinase (STK) to the N‐terminal end of the chimeric FGFR1 kinase. We have deleted the STK domain and mutated the critical Y177 residue and demonstrate that the transforming activity of these mutated genes is reduced compared with the BCR‐FGFR1 parental kinase. In addition,...

SI‐CLP inhibits the growth of mouse mammary adenocarcinoma by preventing recruitment of tumor‐associated macrophages
Chitinase‐like proteins (CLP) are chitin‐binding proteins that lack chitin hydrolyzing activity, but possess cytokine‐like and growth factor‐like properties, and play crucial role in intercellular crosstalk. Both human and mice express two members of CLP family: YKL‐40 and stabilin‐1 interacting chitinase‐like protein (SI‐CLP). Despite numerous reports indicating the role of YKL‐40 in the support of angiogenesis, tumor cell proliferation, invasion and metastasis, the role of its structurally related...

Using linkage studies combined with whole‐exome sequencing to identify novel candidate genes for familial colorectal cancer
Colorectal cancer (CRC) is a complex disorder for which the majority of the underlying germline predisposition factors remain still unidentified. Here, we combined whole‐exome sequencing (WES) and linkage analysis in families with multiple relatives affected by CRC to identify candidate genes harboring rare variants with potential high‐penetrance effects. Forty‐seven affected subjects from 18 extended CRC families underwent WES. Genome‐wide linkage analysis was performed under linear and exponential...

Consumption of meat, traditional and modern processed meat and colorectal cancer risk among the Moroccan population: A large‐scale case–control study
The current study aimed to investigate the relationship between red and white meat subtypes, processed meat (divided into traditional “Khlii, Kaddid” and industrially processed meat) and colorectal cancer (CRC) risk, considering CRC sub‐sites, in Moroccan adults. A case–control study was conducted including 2,906 matched case–control pairs recruited from the five largest university hospitals in Morocco. Dietary data were collected through a validated Food Frequency Questionnaire (FFQ). Multivariable...

Knockout model reveals the role of Nischarin in mammary gland development, breast tumorigenesis and response to metformin treatment
Previously, our lab discovered the protein Nischarin and uncovered its role in regulating cell migration and invasion via its interactions with several proteins. We subsequently described a role for Nischarin in breast cancer, in which it is frequently underexpressed. To characterize Nischarin's role in breast tumorigenesis and mammary gland development more completely, we deleted a critical region of the Nisch gene (exons 7–10) from the mouse genome and observed the effects. Mammary glands in mutant...

Exploring the Diagnostic Potential of Serum Golgi Protein 73 for Hepatic Necroinflammation and Fibrosis in Chronic HCV Infection with Different Stages of Liver Injuries
Background and Aim. Serum Golgi protein 73 (GP73) is a promising alternative biomarker of chronic liver diseases, but most data are from patients with HBV infection rather than HCV. Materials and Methods. Two independent cohorts of chronic hepatitis C (CHC) patients from the 5th Medical Centre of the Chinese PLA General Hospital () and Beijing Youan Hospital () with different histories of HCV infection were enrolled. The correlations between serum GP73 and other biochemical indices, as well as its...

A career start in the Third Reich
Abstract The pathologist Walter Müller is undoubtedly one of the most prominent post-war representatives of his profession. He became full professor and founding dean in Essen, and in 1983 the German Society for Pathology (DGP) awarded him the Rudolf Virchow Medal – the highest distinction of the society – for his merits to the field of pathology. But this glorious career was by no means predetermined. Rather, after the end of the Second World War there were...

Abdominal Lymphangioma and Hemangioma in a Newborn
Abdominal hemangiolymphangioma (HLA) in neonates is a rare condition that demands surgical intervention after a complete preoperative diagnostic approach. The differential diagnosis and the establishment of a therapeutic algorithm is a challenge, both for the neonatologists and the pediatric surgeons, because there is no consensus in the management of HLAs in infancy according to the literature. We report a rare case of abdominal HLA in a female newborn that was admitted to our pediatric surgery...

Infantile Myofibroma Presenting as a Large Ulcerative Nodule in a Newborn
The differential diagnosis of a congenital cutaneous vascular-appearing mass in a newborn is broad and includes both benign and malignant tumors. We report the case of a newborn who presented with an erythematous exophytic skin nodule on the right upper leg. Excision was performed due to ulceration, concern for bleeding, and for diagnosis. Pathology revealed the mass to be an infantile myofibroma. This case highlights the importance of considering a broad differential diagnosis in a newborn with...

The role of fixation disengagement in the parallel programming of sequences of saccades
Abstract One of the core mechanisms involved in the control of saccade responses to selected target stimuli is the disengagement from the current fixation location, so that the next saccade can be executed. To carry out everyday visual tasks, we make multiple eye movements that can be programmed in parallel. However, the role of disengagement in the parallel programming of saccades has not been examined. It is well established that the need for disengagement slows down saccadic...

Analysis of head and chest movements that correspond to gaze directions during walking
Abstract In this paper, we analyze the relationship between head and chest movements and gaze direction in both walking and non-walking conditions. In a different approach from existing studies, we aim to analyze behavior when humans intentionally gaze at a certain target from two perspectives: (1) the relationship between gaze and body movements and (2) the effects of walking on body motion. We performed three experiments: fixed target scenes (Experiment 1), moving target scenes...
