Who should carry out skin cancer excisions? A systematic review
Enas Shuber, Dalia Abdulhussein, Pierre Sinclair, Murtaza KadhumJournal of Cutaneous and Aesthetic Surgery 2019 12(3):153-157Background: The incidence of melanoma and nonmelanoma skin cancers is increasing in the United Kingdom. Surgical excision carries the highest cure rates for all skin cancers and is the first-line treatment for melanomas and high-risk nonmelanoma cancers. This is most commonly performed by general practitioners (GPs), dermatologists, and plastic surgeons. Objective: The aim...

Mastoplasty after massive weight loss: Redefinition and stabilization of the breast mound with submuscular autoprosthesis
Gianfranco M Colicchia, Verdiana Di Pietro, Valerio CervelliJournal of Cutaneous and Aesthetic Surgery 2019 12(3):164-173Context: After massive weight loss, breast changes dramatically becoming ptotic, flat in the upper pole, with significant skin excess. After mastoplasty, often ptosis can recur and the upper pole can lose its fullness again. The technique described in this study treats breast deformities ensuring stable results and avoiding ptosis recurrence. Aim: To analyze a new modality of breast...

Preparation of platelet-rich fibrin membrane over scaffold of collagen sheet, its advantages over compression method: A novel and simple technique
Ashish Jagati, Raju G Chaudhary, Santoshdev P Rathod, Bhushan Madke, Kalgi D Baxi, Dixit KasundraJournal of Cutaneous and Aesthetic Surgery 2019 12(3):174-178Introduction: Platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) is compressed by using various tools to make platelet-rich fibrin membrane (PRFM). Preservation of platelets and plasma content of PRFM depends on the compression method used. To overcome limitations of compression method, we prepared PRFM over scaffold of collagen sheet without using any compression...

Follicular unit “exploitation”: Follicular unit extraction followed by laser hair reduction—A novel approach to repigmentation of postburn leukodermic scars

In contrast to vitiligo, the success rate of skin grafting techniques is much lower in postburn scars owing to altered skin architecture and poor graft uptake. Cellular transfer techniques such as noncultured epidermal or epidermal or keratinocyte suspension suffer the...

The frequency limit of outer hair cell motility measured in vivo
Outer hair cells (OHCs) in the mammalian ear exhibit electromotility, electrically driven somatic length changes that are thought to mechanically amplify sound-evoked vibrations. For this amplification to work, OHCs must respond to sounds on a cycle-by-cycle basis even at frequencies that exceed the low-pass corner frequency of their cell membranes. Using in vivo optical vibrometry we tested this theory by measuring sound-evoked motility in the 13 –25 kHz region of the gerbil cochlea. OHC vibrations...

Increased cochlear radiation dose predicts delayed hearing loss following both stereotactic radiosurgery and fractionated stereotactic radiotherapy for vestibular schwannoma
ConclusionOur data suggests the minimal dose of radiation that the cochlear volume is exposed to is a predictor of delayed hearing loss after either SRS or fSRT. A threshold of 5  Gy/35 Gy may lead to improved hearing preservation after radiotherapy. Further prospective multi center studies can further elucidate this mechanism. Otosclerosis revision surgery in Sweden: hearing outcome, predictive factors and complications
ConclusionsThe hearing results after revision surgery in Sweden is somewhat inferior to those of previously published results involving large centers. Postoperative deafness may be as much as fivefold more common after revision surgery than after primary surgery. Meticulous reading of previous charts and honest counseling regarding the risks and expectations is mandatory before planning revision surgery for otosclerosis. Corporations’ use and misuse of evidence to influence health policy: a case study of sugar-sweetened beverage taxation
Abstract Background Sugar sweetened beverages (SSB) are a major source of sugar in the diet. Although trends in consumption vary across regions, in many countries, particularly LMICs, their consumption continues to increase. In response, a growing number of governments have introduced a tax on SSBs. SSB manufacturers have opposed such taxes, disputing the role that SSBs play in diet-related diseases and the effectiveness of SSB taxation,...

Application of parelectric spectroscopy to detect skin cancer—A pilot study
Abstract Background The early detection of skin cancer is still challenging and calls for objective, fast diagnostic, and ideally non‐invasive methods in order to leave the potentially malignant tumor cells unaltered. In this paper, the parelectric spectroscopy was applied to evaluate the potential of a non‐invasive detection of basal cell carcinoma (BCC) and malignant melanoma. Materials and Methods A prototype of parelectric spectroscopy was used to investigate non‐invasively dipole density...

Materials and Methods The clinical, dermoscopic, and confocal microscopy features of three cases of acquired lymphangiectasias occurring after breast surgery are described along with histopathological correlations. [Comment] Maintenance chemotherapy in rhabdomyosarcoma: the new standard of care
In The Lancet Oncology, Gianni Bisogno and colleagues1 present the results of an important frontline, phase 3 randomised study in children and adolescents with rhabdomyosarcoma. This trial was done by the European paediatric Soft tissue sarcoma Study Group (EpSSG) cooperative group, in children and adolescents with previously untreated high-risk non-metastatic rhabdomyosarcoma, and shows the benefit of six cycles of vinorelbine and oral cyclophosphamide maintenance chemotherapy in this subgroup of...

[Articles] The global burden of non-typhoidal salmonella invasive disease: a systematic analysis for the Global Burden of Disease Study 2017
We present the first global estimates of non-typhoidal salmonella invasive disease that have been produced as part of GBD 2017. Given the high disease burden, particularly in children, elderly people, and people with HIV infection, investigating the sources and transmission pathways of non-typhoidal salmonella invasive disease is crucial to implement effective preventive and control measures.

In The Lancet Infectious Diseases, the GBD 2017 Non-Typhoidal Salmonella Invasive Disease Collaborators1 estimate the global burden of invasive non-typhoidal salmonella disease using Bayesian meta-regression tools. The results show a high but decreasing number of cases since 2005 with a continuously high case fatality rate, consistent with previous estimates. These findings show that serotypes of Salmonella enterica subspecies that cause invasive non-typhoidal salmonella disease are “low-incidence,...

[Articles] Effect of infectious disease consultation on mortality and treatment of patients with candida bloodstream infections: a retrospective, cohort study
Patients with candida bloodstream infection receiving an infectious disease consultation have lower mortality. This finding might be attributable to these individuals receiving a higher number of non-pharmacological, evidence-based interventions and lower amounts of non-treatment. These data suggest that an infectious disease consultation should be an integral part of clinical care of patients with candida bloodstream infection.
