A chromosome-level genome assembly of Cydia pomonella provides insights into chemical ecology and insecticide resistance
Nature Communications, Published online: 17 September 2019; doi:10.1038/s41467-019-12175-9The codling moth, Cydia pomonella, is one of the major pests of pome fruit (apples and pears) and walnuts. Here, the authors sequence and analyze its genome, providing insights on olfactory and detoxification processes that may underlie its worldwide expansion.

Identification of significant chromatin contacts from HiChIP data by FitHiChIP
Nature Communications, Published online: 17 September 2019; doi:10.1038/s41467-019-11950-yHiChIP/PLAC-seq assay is popular for profiling 3D genome interactions among regulatory elements at kilobase resolution. Here the authors describe FitHiChIP an empirical null-based, flexible computational method for statistical significance estimation and loop calling from HiChIP data.

Replication stress induces mitotic death through parallel pathways regulated by WAPL and telomere deprotection
Nature Communications, Published online: 17 September 2019; doi:10.1038/s41467-019-12255-wMitotic catastrophe is a regulated mechanism that responds to aberrant mitoses leading to removal of damaged cells. Here the authors reveal how replication stress induces mitotic death through pathways regulated by WAPL and telomere deprotection.

Evolution of acoustic communication in blind cavefish
Nature Communications, Published online: 17 September 2019; doi:10.1038/s41467-019-12078-9The fish Astyanax mexicanus has divergent cave and river-dwelling eco-morphotypes. Here, Hyacinthe et al. show that cave and river fish communicate sonically, but that the sounds produced and the responses elicited in the two morphs depend differently on the social and behavioral context.

A shared core microbiome in soda lakes separated by large distances
Nature Communications, Published online: 17 September 2019; doi:10.1038/s41467-019-12195-5Alkaline lakes have some of the highest productivity rates in freshwater ecosystems. Here the authors report amplicon, metagenome, and proteome sequencing from microbial mat communities of four alkaline lakes in Canada, and compare these lakes to central Asian soda lakes, revealing a shared core microbiome despite the geographical distance.

A building-block design for enhanced visible-light switching of diarylethenes
Nature Communications, Published online: 17 September 2019; doi:10.1038/s41467-019-12302-6Development of light-responsive materials imposes a demand on visible-light photoswitching but this is often achieved at expense of photochromic performance. Here the authors use a building-block design to achieve a diarylethene all-visible-light photoswitch with improved photochromic efficiency and enhanced photo-fatigue resistance.
