Individual Differences in Acoustic-Prosodic Entrainment in Spoken Dialogue
Publication date: Available online 1 November 2019Source: Speech CommunicationAuthor(s): Andreas Weise, Sarah Ita Levitan, Julia Hirschberg, Rivka LevitanAbstractThe tendency of conversation partners to adjust to each other to become similar, known as entrainment, has been studied for many years. Several studies have linked differences in this behavior to gender, but with inconsistent results. We analyze individual differences in two forms of local, acoustic-prosodic entrainment in two large corpora...

Women's perspective on life after total laryngectomy: a qualitative study.
CONCLUSIONS & IMPLICATIONS: Women who undergo total laryngectomy are likely to experience issues in returning to work, the performance of informal care-work, the spousal relationship, intimacy and social interaction due to stigmatization. Medical pretreatment counselling and multidisciplinary rehabilitation programmes should help patients form realistic expectations and prepare them for the changes they will face. A gender- and age-matched laryngectomized patient visitor can contribute to this...

A specific combination of USH2A variants causing truncating proteins in both alleles could demonstrate more severe audiological phenotype than that of USH2A variants carrying one truncating mutation and one missense mutation, suggesting...

Hospice Care: It's Not About Giving Up; It's About Re-Focusing Priorities
Photo credit Gus Moretta Our culture is steeped in language that makes accepting the terminal diagnosis of ourselves or a loved one more difficult to accept than it needs to be. Doctors say, “I’m sorry, there’s nothing more we can do. You might want to look into hospice care.” Patients tell their doctors that they want “aggressive treatment,” until there is nothing else that can be done, then they will go on hospice care. The crux of these conversations is that medicine will do everything possible...

Community Living for Hospice Patients: Don't " Put " People in Nursing Homes
by Lizzy Miles (@LizzyMiles_MSW)No one should ever be “put” in a nursing home. You might agree with this statement because you don’t like nursing homes, but that is not what I’m saying. The word “put” is offensive when you are describing a person, unless you are talking about putting a 3 year old in the time out corner because he colored on the walls.I would like to make the argument that no adult wants to be ‘put’ anywhere. You put dishes away, you do not put people away. When we are facing a situation...

Senescent Cells in Blind Mole Rats do not Exhibit the Senescence-Associated Secretory Phenotype
Naked mole-rats live as much as nine times longer than similarly sized rodent species. Naked mole rats stay fit and healthy and physiologically youthful right up until very late life. The near relative species of blind mole-rat has many...

This is kind of buried in multiple threads, but this is a big deal. CMS just proposed a rule change for supervision level of hospital outpatient therapeutic services from direct to general. This doesn't sound like a big deal, but it is actually a HUGE deal. What this means functionally, is that a radiation oncologist will not need to be present to treat patients in hospital settings (i.e. the majority of jobs currently). This means a single Rad Onc can provide supervision for 2-3 hospitals......
