To the Editor—With great interest, we read the article published in July 2018 by Khadr et al [1] on the epidemiology of herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) in Asia and its detection from genital ulcer disease (GUD) and genital herpes (GH). As mentioned by authors, data availability varied by country and no data were available for 13 countries/ territories. From India, although a number of studies on the seroprevalence of HSV-1 were included, there was only 1 study on GUD and GH [2] that qualified for the meta-analysis (Table 4 of [1]), conducted from 1983 to 1986. HSV-1 was detected by culture and serology in 1 of 10 (10%) patients with primary GH, and none of 42 patients with recurrent GH. These results do not seem to represent contemporary reality in one of the fastest-growing regions in the world with rapid urbanization, a burgeoning young population, and changing sexual mores.
