Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this study was to determine the correlation between soft and hard tissue changes in zygomaticomaxillary region by facial bone contouring surgery of patients with craniofacial fibrous dysplasia (FD).
Methods
The study is a retrospective case series which reviewed 13 patients with craniofacial FD in zygomaticomaxillary region who underwent navigation-guided facial bone contouring surgery from January 2013 to October 2017. Pre- and post-operative computed tomography (CT) data (more than 3 months) were collected, pre- and post-operative soft and hard tissues were placed in the same spatial coordinate system by multi-point registration to measure the distances between the corresponding pre- and post-operative points of soft and hard tissues. The outcome variable was corresponding soft tissue change. The correlation between hard and soft tissue changes were obtained using correlation analysis by SPSS software. The linear regression equation of soft and hard tissue changes was used to predict corresponding soft tissue changes.
Results
The Pearson correlation coefficient of the zygomatic region was 0.954 (P<0.001), and that coefficient for the maxillary region was 0.758 (P<0.001). The linear regression index (R2) for the zygomatic and the maxillary regions was 0.910 (P<0.001) and 0.575 (P<0.001). Theβvalue of linear regression equation of the zygomatic and maxillary regions were 0.815(P<0.001)and 0.52(P<0.001).
Conclusion
Soft and hard tissue changes were highly correlated in both zygomatic area and maxillary area, while the variance of maxillary area was slightly higher than zygomatic area. This implied that, the change of 1mm bone tissue along the tangent direction of the bone contour will cause a change of 0.815 mm soft tissue in zygomatic region and 0.52mm soft tissue in maxillary region.
