Neutrophil-to-Lymphocyte Ratio and Carotid Artery Calcified Plaque in Older Male Patients With Severe Obstructive Sleep Apnea
I have read with interest the article by Lee et  al,1 who conducted a cross-sectional study to compare the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) between groups with and without carotid artery calcified plaque (CACP) in older male patients with severe obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). The authors observed that the mean NLP value of OSA patients with CACP was significantly higher than that of OSA patients without CACP. In contrast, cardiovascular risk factors such as age, body mass index, hypertension,...

Advanced Model of a 4-Step Chart for Percutaneous Approaches to Condylar Fractures: A Tool to Comprehend Trends in Classification Based on the Dissection Route
In the application of percutaneous approaches for mandibular condyle fractures, facial nerve injury (FNI) has been the most troubling aspect associated with surgical repair.1 The conventional classification of these approaches according to the incision site does not reflect the risk of FNI owing to diverse dissection routes via a similar incision,2 which have confused surgeons and residents who intend to minimize the morbidity.3 Equivocal examples in the treatment of condylar neck and subcondylar...

Coronectomy: A Useful Approach in Minimizing Nerve Injury Compared with Traditional Extraction of Deeply Impacted Mandibular Third Molars
A surgical procedure to minimize the incidence of inferior alveolar nerve injury (IANI) in deeply impacted mandibular third molars (IMTMs) has been proposed. Our study compared near-term outcomes between coronectomy and traditional extraction of IMTMs, and evaluated long-term complications after coronectomy with cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT). Treatment of Multiple Odontogenic Keratocysts Involving Chinese Patients
The optimal treatment of odontogenic keratocysts (OKCs) remains a matter of debate in reported studies. The present study aimed to estimate the postoperative recurrence rates of multiple OKCs (MOKCs) in Chinese patients. (Source: Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery)

Unusual case of transdural extension of glioblastoma multiform in the maxillofacial region and a review of the literature
We present an unusual case of a 57-year old female who presented one year after surgical resection and adjuvant therapy, with evidence of recurrent tumor invading through the skull base into the orbital apex, masticator and the pterygoid space. We will also review all available case reports on local invasion of glioblastoma that occur in absence of treatment as well as recurrence away from initial surgical location. Maxillomandibular Advancement for Obstructive Sleep Apnea Produces Long-term Horizontal Advancement of the Maxilla and Mandible.
As there is limited existing data, the purpose of this study was to evaluate long-term craniofacial cephalometric skeletal changes associated with maxillomandibular advancement (MMA) for obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). (Source: Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery)

Alveolar iodine tampon packing reduces postoperative morbidity after third molar surgery
The aim of this study was to assess the efficacy of an iodine tampon after mandibular third molar surgery on oral health related quality of life (OHRQoL) use of painkillers, postoperative sequela and self-care behaviors in the first postoperative week. Residency Interview Experiences in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Differ by Gender and Impact Residency Ranking
Resident interview experiences are crucial for applicants when ranking programs. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the interview experience among current oral and maxillofacial surgery (OMS) residents to determine factors that influenced their selection and ranking of training programs, and whether experiences differed between females and males. Bone levels are preserved after simultaneous sinus elevation at time of implant placement
The purpose of this study is to confirm that after simultaneous implant placement and vertical bone augmentation in the posterior maxilla, the immediate postoperative bone height is maintained after 2-3 years of follow-up. Methods: Consecutive patients treated with implant placement in the posterior maxilla were evaluated. Cone beam scans were taken preoperatively, immediately after implant placement, and for the sinus grafted cases 2-3 years after surgery. Crestal bone heights were measured. Patients...

Of Dry Sockets and Preemptive Opioids
Removal of third molars is accompanied by the ever-present reality of patients occasionally developing localized alveolar osteitis —dry socket. Since telephone prescriptions for Schedule II drugs are technically permitted but, for practical purposes, virtually impossible, should hydrocodone be provided to everyone at the time of surgery “just in case” symptoms of dry socket develop? If so, are you convinced hydrocodone ac tually helps dry socket pain better than NSAIDs-acetaminophen? Thirty-plus...
