HMGB1 expression in SJS/TEN sera and skin
Summary Stevens Johnson Syndrome (SJS) and toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN) are rare, severe, skin blistering conditions in which areas of skin die and detach. They actually represent a single disease with a spectrum of severity: less than 10% body surface area detachment in SJS and more than 30% in TEN. It affects around 500 people in the UK each year and is most commonly caused by a reaction to a wide‐range of commonly prescribed drugs. This study brought together researchers and patients from...

Insight into the management of actinic keratosis
Summary Actinic keratoses (AK) are rough skin lesions (patches) caused by long‐term sun exposure in light skinned individuals, affecting 24‐60% of people above the age of 50. The current management of AK patients (meaning how they are diagnosed and treated and how long they are ‘followed up’ for) seems to vary within and between primary care (e.g. GPs) and secondary care (e.g. hospital dermatology departments). This Dutch study aimed to provide insight into underlying motives of current AK management....

Anti‐C1q antibodies in scleroderma
Summary Systemic sclerosis (SSc) is an autoimmune condition which means that the body's immune system, which usually fights off disease, wrongly targets healthy parts of the body, and SSc patients produce antibodies to their own tissues (‘autoantibodies’). Extensive thickening and scarring of tissues (fibrosis) is the main feature of the condition and is due to over‐production of collagen. Changes in small blood vessels also occur. When fibrosis occurs in the lungs (pulmonary fibrosis) it can lead...

A Case of Adjacent, Clonally Distinct Borderline Melanocytic Tumors on the Arm
Abstract: Atypical Spitz tumor (AST) is a melanocytic proliferation that shares histopathologic features of Spitz nevus and spitzoid melanoma. Distinction of AST from spitzoid melanoma is critical because the majority of ASTs will follow an indolent course. Array-based comparative genomic hybridization (aCGH) has been suggested as a potential tool for evaluating malignant potential in spitzoid tumors. We present a case of a 52-year-old woman with an AST in which aCGH was crucial in guiding correct...

The Importance of the Biopsy Technique in the Diagnosis of Histoid Leprosy
Abstract: Histoid leprosy (HL) was originally described by Wade in 1963 and is regarded as a rare variant of lepromatous leprosy (LL). These characteristic clinical lesions are firm, deeply adhered nodules with features reminiscent of dermatofibromas or keloids in a background of apparently healthy skin. The main histopathological findings described are the presence of spindle cell histiocytes immersed in a richly collagenized background, usually forming a nodular pattern of infiltration with...

Melanotic Schwannoma of the Vulva: A Case Report and Review of the Literature
Abstract: Melanotic schwannoma is a pigmented tumor of peripheral nerve differentiation. Primary cutaneous presentations are extremely rare, as the bulk of melanotic schwannomas tend to develop in paraspinal and axial sites. Tumors arise sporadically and in the setting of the Carney complex. Alterations in the gene encoding protein kinase A regulatory subunit-α (PRKAR1A) underlie most patients with the Carney complex and mediate melanotic schwannoma tumorigenesis. Melanotic schwannomas from noncutaneous...

Sarcomatoid Variant of Primary Cutaneous Anaplastic Large Cell Lymphoma
Abstract: Sarcomatoid variant of primary cutaneous anaplastic large cell lymphoma is rare and is a diagnostic challenge. Clinical manifestation often mimics that of an infectious disease. Predominance of spindle cells in the biopsy specimen prevents from suspecting lymphoma. Here, we report the fourth case of this entity with good prognosis. A 30-year-old woman presented with several nodules on the whole body. The biopsy revealed infiltration of spindle cells in the dermis with myxomatous background....

Intravascular Colonization of Kaposi Sarcoma: Expanding the Spectrum of Specific Infiltrates of B-Cell Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia
Abstract: B-cell chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL), a low-grade malignancy consisting of CD5(+), CD23(+), and CD43(+) small B lymphocytes, is the most frequent leukemia in the western world. Patients with CLL may exhibit skin changes characterized by histopathologic evidence of infiltration by atypical B lymphocytes, also known as “specific cutaneous infiltrates of CLL”; in addition, CLL is known to be associated with an increased risk of second cancers, including Kaposi sarcoma (KS). The combination...

Pediatric red ear syndrome: A case report of an erythromelalgia type and review of the literature
Abstract Red ear syndrome has been reported in the literature to have similarities to erythromelalgia with auricular involvement; however, the distinction between the two is controversial. Red ear syndrome has previously been classified as idiopathic (primary) or secondary, with headaches being the most common association in the idiopathic or primary form. We present a case of pediatric red ear syndrome with hand and foot involvement that we believe represents auricular erythromelalgia. In this...
